thiefknot05This week’s knot, the Thief Knot, is one of the most interesting knots to teach people about. The Thief Knot is said to have been tied by Sailor’s who wanted a way to see if their Sea Bag was being tampered with. The crafty Sailor would tie the Thief Knot, which closely resembles the Square Knot (Reef Knot), counting on a careless thief.

The Thief Knot is tied much like the Square Knot, but the ends of the knot are at opposite ends. The careless thief, upon seeing what knot was tied in the Sailor’s sea bag, would tie the bag back with a regular Square Knot alerting the Sailor his bag had been rummaged through.

Continuing with our weekly series on knots we wanted to first pass along some information. Knot tying is an invaluable and perishable skill set that must be practiced over and over again. You should be able to tie knots in the dark and under all types of conditions. When you get good at that, sink to the bottom of a pool and try it there, just have a buddy watching… If you drown, you won’t be able to read all the valuable information we have here!

Seriously though… when you’re at your worst, knowing how to tie knots could save your life. Know how to UNTIE them too, because what’s the point of a knot if you can’t get it out?

Just a quick tip to say that Tactical Assault Gear is having another 50% off sale this weekend only. The sale expires at midnight Monday the 13th!

While we’re not really a news site, I thought everyone could benefit from a 1/2 off gear sale. I picked up an Advanced Loadout Bag during their last sale and it’s the heat! Look for a review coming up soon.

Soft Body Armor

by The ITS Crew on April 8, 2009

Terminal Ballistic Information

For those of us who have used soft body armor, and for those in the market to make a purchase, the following is a must read. The information comes from subject matter expert Dr. Gary K. Roberts, LCDR, USNR.

Background and Qualifications

Dr. Roberts is currently on staff at Stanford University Medical Center, a large teaching hospital and Level I Trauma Center were he performs hospital dentistry and surgery. After completing his residency at Navy Hospital Oakland in 1989, Roberts studied at the Army Wound Ballistic Research Laboratory: Letterman Army Institute of Research while on active military duty, and became one of the first members of the International Wound Ballistic Association. sheepshank.jpg So honestly, how many times have you been in a situation where you’ve had a rope in your hands trying to tie something off or lash something down and think, crap, I wish I would have been a Boy Scout… Well, stress no more!

ITS is proud to announce a new weekly feature where we’ll feature a review of a different knot by providing step-by-step tying instructions and listing practical (and tactical) uses of the knot. In addition, each knot will be assigned a rating from 1-5 (1 representing the lowest score) based on the following four properties: [Read More…]

Emergency Book

I haven’t been much in the reading mood lately, but Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life by Neil Strauss is amazing! I finished all 418 pages the same day I bought it. I can’t say that a book has held my attention like this ever before. Emergency is packed with information on how to increase your odds of surviving and escaping when SHTF.

Strauss has in depth information on obtaining multiple passports, living off the grid, crossing the border, lock picking, protecting your assets, Swiss banking and the art of disappearing. I can’t say that I have any money for an off-shore account, but we can dream can’t we?

If you’ve ever read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand then this book is for you.

Lock Picking 101

by The ITS Crew on April 3, 2009

Correct key

Correct key

Lock picking is something we’ve been doing for quite a while and we wanted to share some tips on how to learn to pick locks. We plan on having many more articles covering lock picking, but this is just an introduction.

This skill set is invaluable in many situations you might find yourself in. Locking yourself out of the house, loosing the key to that padlock on your gear locker, escaping and evading or getting into someplace covertly. We’re not advocating anything illegal here, as this skill set is perfectly legal to have as a hobby. After learning how to pick locks, you’ll never want to leave the house without a pick and a tension wrench…just in case. [Read More…]
