I happened to think that sipping on warm water throughout the track can really help! But the gear is everything. You don't wanna end up freezing in your own sweat!

These are great tips. I've just started running again after taking a few years off. Ran 2 miles the other day ... the farthest I've ever been able to pull off without stopping. I need a better place to run ... running around the neighborhood is boring.

I recently found a pretty slick app for distracting you while you run. It's called Zombies, Run! and is available for both the iPhone and Android.

https://www.zombiesrungame.com/

Basically, you're a runner in the zombie apocalypse and are out picking up supplies for your camp. The narrative is wonderfully done and the app does a great job setting the mood and putting you right in the middle of the action. You can also listen to your music while you're using this app. It will duck your music volume when the app needs your attention.

And, you can use this simultaneously with RunKeeper. There's no problem whatsoever using the two apps together. In fact, I use Spotify, RunKeeper, and Zombies, Run! all together with no issues at all.

In 87 to 92 I used to hike trails in a state park in the mornings in BDUS and LBE. A ranger stopped me once because the windchill was below zero. When he found out I as military he just laughed and went on. I'm older, wiser and have better gear now. It did pay off at different times though. I think more mentally than physically. The new gear out there beats the old sweat suits. Could have used new gear on cold mornings running at Camp Bullis.

My longest runs are about 40mins and the coldest run I do is in about -4 degrees Celsius here in Johannesburg, South Africa. I find that in the cold my hands really freeze up to the point where I feel like I am getting chilblains and then suddenly around the 15min mark my hands warm up dramatically and feel absolutely fine. The same probably won't apply in really low temps you guys experience in the Northern Hemisphere but it's worth a try if it doesn't get "too cold".

I'm convinced running in the cold is good for you. Since I've been running and mountain biking in winter I have handled the cold FAR FAR better than I have in previous winters. I have also been ill fewer times during the winter.

Regards, Martin.

For motivation there are great apps out for for smart phone users. the 5k Runner app is great for beginners it will get you up and running gradually and its incredibly rewarding to see your progress as you go. That got me up and running now im running 5miles at a time and training for 10k level and hopefully a half marathon. Mentality is KEY you have to set up a realistic achievable goal for yourself and let nothing stop you. if you fail, get up and try again until you succeed. The cold hurts and the heat is miserable but if you have your mind in the right place its nothing compared to the pride you feel once you have completed your goal and it will keep you hungry for more!

Good Article.
I was out in 36° for five miles with minimal wind last night. Combination of an Arcteryx merino base under UA Cold Gear Quarter Zip(which I found in hi viz green at Dick's) and UA thin running pants worked very well. Also the fleece gloves I had we're key. I didn't realize how much so until my cool down when I popped one off to work iPhone and felt the difference.

Going to be trying different combinations over the next few weeks to find the right match for a GRC in February. Need to balance the cardio aspects with some durability for whatever they have planned for us. Should be interesting...
