John D. McCann, whom you may recall has recently been a contributor recently ITS, has just released a new book called Stay Alive! Survival Skills You Need.
You may remember towards the beginning days of ITS when I mentioned the Mini Survival Kits I built based on John’s first book, Build The Perfect Survival Kit. He’s been one of my favorite authors for a long time and I was stoked to have him contribute to ITS Tactical.
I’m even more excited about this new book, as it keeps in line with what I love about John as an author. He takes a no-nonsense, anal-retentive look at survival as a whole and breaks it down for everyone to understand. Idle hands have been nowhere in sight around the ITS household and most days it feels pretty good to stay busy. The majority of you in the tactical realm are consistently keeping your hands busy so I’m confident you can relate.
I’m almost always crocheting something in my down time, so what better way to keep my hands busy than to make something that will go directly to our troops!

The media has been a buzz this weekend, reporting on the single deadliest disaster to impact US forces since Operation Red Wings on June 28, 2005.
While the stories and headlines seem to be changing by the hour, it appears that 38 have been left dead, including 25 Navy SEALs, an Army Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) crew, Air Force Special Operations, 7 Afghan Special Forces, a SEAL K9 and an Interpreter.
Late August 5th, the Chinook carrying this QRF (Quick Reaction Force) was hit with an RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) in the province of Wardak on their way to rescue four SEALs under attack. Three of these SEALs were also killed and the fourth rescued.
What has unfortunately been made public is that the SEALs were from DEVGRU (Development Group) which is also known as SEAL Team 6. Of course the media jumped all over the fact that this was the same unit responsible for taking out Bin Laden and the wrong things have been brought to light because of this. We have an upcoming article written by former DEVGRU Operator Craig Sawyer that talks directly about OPSEC (Operational Security) and the responsibility of the press on matters like these.
This loss is tragic to all involved and especially to DEVGRU, which is a very small community of SEALs. A few things have already been set up to help the families of the fallen and we’re working hard to come up with our own fundraiser to do all that we can as a community here at ITS Tactical, much like we did for America’s Mighty Warriors.
The Navy SEAL Foundation has set up a way to make a $10 donation benefiting the families by texting SEAL to 90999. A one-time $10 charge will be added to your wireless bill and donations of more than $10 can be made directly by visiting their Website at http://navysealfoundation.org/
Arc’teryx has also set up a Special Operations Support Fund through PayPal for the charities that support the families of those involved.

There’s a YouTube video that’s currently circulating around the Internet that shows YouTuber Derek Grebner, of Tex Grebner Outdoors, taking his audience through his Negligent Discharge and how he wound up shooting himself in the leg with his Kimber 1911.
His expensive bullet wound could have inflicted much more damage and he was extremely lucky he didn’t blow out his entire knee cap. I strongly feel that this ND could have been prevented by better trigger discipline, but I’m sure he probably thinks that himself too.
While I agree with Derek’s statement that he didn’t feel it was caused by the Blackhawk SERPA holster, I still feel like the SERPA is NOT A BEGINNER’S HOLSTER. The SERPA holster relies on your index finger to slightly depress or graze the trigger guard release to draw your firearm. If trigger discipline is not fully developed or rushed, it’s easy for an index finger to curl and press the release, rather than slightly rub the release with a properly indexed trigger finger. Hopefully the men of Afghanistan are holding on tightly to their head scarves, because American women are joining forces with their male counterparts in combat.
According to today’s post on Military.com the U.S. Army Special Operations Command has begun deploying female soldiers as part of front-line commando units. These soldiers will assist Special Forces and Ranger units by leading Cultural Support Teams (CST) which will interact with the female segments of Afghan society providing not only intelligence support but also social outreach. Approximately 30 female soldiers are already in the field.
This is good news for women who’ve wanted to serve in combat positions and have been waiting for positions to emerge. I’m excited for new service opportunities for interested and qualified female soldiers, but I’m also concerned that this new step into combat is in a part of the world that is so harmful and unforgiving towards women. I guess there is no graceful and cushy entrance into combat.

I just noticed that Triple Aught Design just released their new Force 10 Cargo Shorts in NYCO Ripstop today, so I picked up pair in both colors they offer. I’m looking forward to checking them out, as I’ve never owned a pair of their shorts before and the boss allows us to wear shorts to work here at ITS HQ.
