On today’s latest Knot of the Week, I’ll be explaining a method I’ve found for not only storing paracord on a boonie hat, but to weave it using a Chain Sinnet. This will allow you to quickly remove it if and when you need it.

If you remember previous knots we’ve taught here on ITS, we’ve gone over a Paracord Storage Sinnet and a Chain Sinnet in the past. With the storage sinnet we created you wind up with a donut looking paracord spool that can quickly unravel as you need the cordage. While this is a great method for storage, the downside is the time it takes you to create it.

You’re certainly not saving yourself any time with the method below, but you’re also not spooling 50 or 100 feet into a storage sinnet either, which can take up to an hour and a half. With the Boonie Hat Paracord Storage Sinnet, you can take a 20-30 ft. section of paracord and weave it on in about 30-45 minutes.

This may seem like a long time, but think of it as an investment. If you wear a boonie hat and have seen other methods for storing paracord on one, you’ve probably seen it all like I have. My issue with other methods is that they may look great, or have an awesome pattern, but how long is it going to take you to untie that when you need it?

I feel that this method I’ll show you today will solve that issue. Again, investing the time now to weave in this sinnet fashion will save you time in the long run when you most need it.

Boonie Hat Paracord Storage Sinnet » Coils

(Strength: 4/Secure: 4/Stability: 4/Difficulty: 3)

For this project, you’ll need around 20-30 feet of paracord. It’s always better to start on the longer side so that you don’t run out along the way.

This week’s Knot of the Week is a reader requested knot that we’ve had quite a few emails asking us to demonstrate.

The Paracord Storage Sinnet features a quick-release sinnet style wrapping that efficiently stores your paracord for immediate use, but unfortunately takes forever to create.

Much like the Chain Sinnet we’ve demonstrated in the past, the Paracord Storage Sinnet will also allow you to store your paracord in a compact, easy to use method.

So if you’ve got some time to spare and a lot of paracord, give this knot a shot. We timed the tying in this demonstration, and for approx. 100 ft. of paracord it took us right around an hour.

Paracord Storage Sinnet » Coils

(Strength: 4/Secure: 4/Stability: 4/Difficulty: 3)

Uses:

• Storing lengths of paracord
• Quick-release deployment of paracord

Tying Instructions:

1. Coil up approx. 5-6 loops of paracord, ensuring the standing end is within the loops
2. Form a bight with the working part of the line at the top of your coiled sections
3. Create a loop from the bight
4. Pull the working part under, around and through the loop you just created
5. Tighten the trapped loop by tightening up the original loop you created
6. *At this stage, ensure that the coils of paracord are staying uniform and the same size*
7. Take the working part and bring it back underneath creating another loop
8. Feed this loop into the existing loop
9. To trap this loop you’ll need to tighten the existing loop by working one side of it.
10. Once the loop is trapped pull the slack out of the loop
11. It’s probably a good idea to watch the video, especially towards the end, as it’s hard to properly describe this technique with words
12. The pattern is repeated over and over again and will eventually overlap on top of the existing sinnet
13. Finish off the sinnet with a slipped loop for easy deployment as needed

The Knot of the Week picks back up today after a short hiatus due to our Camouflage Comparison.

This week we’ll be going over the the Alpine Coil and how it can be used to help keep your rope ready for imminent use.

If you’re climbing or working in an area where you know you could have to deploy a rope at a moments notice, an Alpine Coil is one of the best ways to carry a rope.

An Alpine Coil stands apart from other rope coils for this exact reason, untying other coils can be time consuming and seconds count in an emergency situation.

By simply pulling the working end out of a bight and unwrapping a few turns, you’re left holding the end of the rope in one hand and throwing the remainder with the other.

As long as you’ve coiled the rope correctly, ensuring that each loop stacks on top of the latter, you’re rope should deploy perfectly.

Before throwing, the standing end should be properly anchored.

Alpine Coil » Coils

(Strength: 5/Secure: 5/Stability: 4/Difficulty: 3)

Uses:

• Coiling rope for imminent use
• Can also be used to store rope

Tying Instructions:

1. Coil the rope, ensuring that the starting end is in your hand at the top of the coil
2. As you’re bringing the last coil past the top, form a bight in the working part
3. Take the remaining working part and make a few wraps around coils, ensuring you trap the staring end in the wraps
4. *Don’t make too many wraps here, as it defeats the purpose of having a rope ready to go for emergencies*
5. You should wind up with just enough of a working end to feed it through the bight after your wraps
6. To tighten up the bight, simply pull on the end not involved in the wrapping

Our Knot of the Week continues this week with the Chain Sinnet.

Often called the Daisy Chain or Chain Plait, we’ll be referring to it as the Chain Sinnet in this article.

You may have seen this knot commonly tied in extension cords to shorten them up, and also provide a no-tangle solution while stored.

Today we’ll show you our method of tying the Chain Sinnet for a rope storage method that’s ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.

Chain Sinnet » Coils

(Strength: 4/Secure: 4/Stability: 4/Difficulty: 3)

Uses:

• Shortening a rope
• Storing rope
• Great knot for washing rope
• Getting ooh’s and aah’s from your neighbors when they see your extension cords

Tying Instructions:

1. Find the ends of your rope, match them up and work your way to the middle of the doubled rope
2. Take the middle bight of rope, which becomes your working end, and make a loop
3. Ensure that you have at least 12″ of slack hanging behind your loop
4. Reach through the loop grabbing the working end and pull, creating another loop
5. Take what was once your standing part and make a bight
6. Reach through the loop you just created and pull the bight through
7. Again, create a bight and pull it through the next loop
8. Repeat this process until you have reached the point where you could just make 1-2 more loops
9. Pull one last large bight and tie an overhand knot with the leftover from the working end
10. All you should have to do to unravel the rope is to simply pull the tails from the overhand knot
11. Keep pulling this end until the rope has unraveled to the original knot you made, which will pull apart easily too
