are license plates removable in the US?

Overhere they are, and all (but mine grrrrrrrr) are mounted on a plastic frame with many cutouts.

Assuming you want to hide a non-coded key, it is easy to reduce its width to fit among those cutouts

I had an old Chevy wagon that was easy to lock the keys inside. After doing it a few times and having to dig up a piece of wire each time, I wound a length of hanger wire around the trailer hitch, out of sight but I could get it out in seconds. I put a permanent loop on the end for getting the lock button up.

I have not locked my self out in many years however I still keep a key hiding under the car. Get a small prescription bottle that the key will fit in and zip tie the bottle under the car where it can be reached without to much trouble.
