Take it with a grain of salt, but here's some tips for identifying people carrying handguns according to a NYPD detective. Note that having a proper holster prevents most of these signs. Try to avoid these behaviors to better conceal your own handgun.

A lot of these also break another golden rule: quit touching your fucking gun. I've harped on people for that. Get the right holster and it's not going anywhere.

Interesting read though much of the information was somewhat obvious.

I myself, I know I'm guilty of every so often checking to make sure it's still there, especially after a bump in a crowded area or while getting out of my car, etc.

Though I know it's there, I can feel the weight, I do it every time.

It was a good read.  A few interesting perspectives.

I will like to add this from some of my travels that I have picked up on.

Be cautious of the guy with a fanny pack.  It will most likely be a 1911 as they are heavy critters.   Or it is a plastic gun with several mags.

This is a general rule... avoid the guy with the fanny pack... there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with him if he is still using a fanny pack.

Fanny packs are very old school and given the larger than normal population of old people where I live I see these old dudes with fanny packs all the time and if you look closely you can see that many of them have the full wrap around zipper or velcro that is found in the gun holster fanny packs. These old guys, and anybody else that still use a fanny pack to carry their gun, haven't caught on that a fanny pack is about as blatant and just open carrying it.

Hey, I carry in a fanny pack....when I'm carrying a ruck with a waistbelt.
