Anyone know how to lookup the owner of a vehicle by their license plate number? This particular vehicle is from New Jersey.

What's the reason? If I recall, looking up someone's info via license plate isn't exactly legal.

Yeah, that's sketchy at best.

Even in LE I need a valid reason to pull up someone's info. I can run a plate that's in front of me for no reason, but I can't run the full check unless I have enough probable cause to execute a traffic stop.

Ok, nevermind then. I would have thought it was a matter of public record.

There's too much sensitive information tied to a plate for it to be a public record, even though there's a lot of sensitive shit that happens to be public record, but I digress.

OPRA is a double edged sword. I have very mixed feelings on transparency.

I don't believe its legal either you have to be an offer at a traffic stop or I suppose someone part of a law enforcement agency. However if its a serious enough thing that this license plate owner is a accused of I am sure you can file a police report and this info would be helpful for any law enforcement investigation.

You could do a tax record lookup for vehicle make/model but know that if you're using county/state/federal resources to do something shady you might fall down a lot on the way to the court house.  Just saying.

It is illegal to run a license plate check on someone else, regardless of the circumstances. Only a member of law enforcement can run a license plate or lookup license plate numbers to find vehicle owner information.

While there are companies that offer such things as a free license plate or tag number search, you should always be careful when dealing with this type of company and always read the fine print. If you see an online license plates search, It is most likely a scam.
