I'll throw in two things that I've become a big believer in. I carry a Streamlight Strion on my belt. It has variable light settings, so you have a bright light, but you aren't blinding yourself when searching the interior of a car. Since the light is rechargeable via a dock, you really don't need to be "stingy" using the light for fear of expensive batteries.
The second thing I use more than I would have thought is this:

I started with it to hold my spare car key to slide behind my mag pouch. It's come in very handy to pop open common area doors/unscrew license plates/etc. I may look for something more purpose-built in the future, but this has worked well so far.
