Another option if you're still not into 5.56, is 6.8 in an AR platform. But again, I don't know if there's an agreed upon standard for gas port size. But I haven't heard too many complaints from the major brands.
Other than that, I'd have to agree that an AR in 5.56 really does meet your needs

6.8 misses out because it does not use readily available magazines. As I recall it requires proprietary magazines.
If proprietary magazines are alright I would strongly recommend the 6.5 Grendel.

Maybe I have discounted .223/5.56 too much. I wanted something with more power, but it is adequate.

Interesting. I remember when it was new and popular. A lot of folks saying 5.56 mags would work fine. Never got into it, so never researched it. Thanks for the info
