They Listened! ATF Reverses Plan for M855 Green Tip Ammo Ban… For Now

By Bryan Black

ATF M855 Ammo Ban

I can only hope that you didn’t pay any outrageous prices for M855 Ammo, giving into those looking to cash in on the recent news that the ATF would be banning M855 Ammo. After more than 80,000 comments flooded in, the ATF has decided not to proceed with the framework to ban the M855 round for civilian purchase.

Here’s the official message that the ATF Public Affairs Division just posted today:

Thank you for your interest in ATF’s proposed framework for determining whether certain projectiles are “primarily intended for sporting purposes” within the meaning of 18 U.S.C. 921(a)(17)(C). The informal comment period will close on Monday, March 16, 2015. ATF has already received more than 80,000 comments, which will be made publicly available as soon as practicable.

Although ATF endeavored to create a proposal that reflected a good faith interpretation of the law and balanced the interests of law enforcement, industry, and sportsmen, the vast majority of the comments received to date are critical of the framework, and include issues that deserve further study. Accordingly, ATF will not at this time seek to issue a final framework. After the close of the comment period, ATF will process the comments received, further evaluate the issues raised therein, and provide additional open and transparent process (for example, through additional proposals and opportunities for comment) before proceeding with any framework.

We’ll keep you posted on the progress, as the ATF has said that it plans to “further evaluate the issues raised…before proceeding with any framework.” Hopefully things return to normal soon with prices and the dollar a round pricing we’re seeing goes back to the normal 30 to 40 cents. Time will tell though. For a recap of the original details surrounding the ban, click here.

I’d be happy to see some hoarders get burned on paying dumb prices and causing a false panic.

    • duck762

people have the right to buy what ever they want and at anyprice they can afford..BUT to those asshats that bought bulk to sell at massive prices well they suck cause theyre screwing a friend..

  • Adam Torma

Sorry, but this is a misleading post.THIS CHANGES NOTHING….It simply removes the implication that they’ve made up their minds ahead of time. They simply stated they’ll be taking no action before the comment period ends, after which time they may still ban it. Also, they banned 7n6 and surplus steel core 7.62 under the same guise last year, so we need some kind of determination that can be retroactive in removing those arbitrary bans as well. Sigh

I learned long ago not to jump on a buying spree when this shit goes on…

  • Frank Rock

I’d like to see people actually do their homework before making comments.

  • John Newman

What do you think the point of the poutrage was in the first place, the BATF didn’t do a thing, literally. They didn’t ban greentips, nor did they unban them. But greentip sellers certainly took the opportunity to price gouge…

  • Frank Rock

It was already done in the 2014 regulation

  • JoeFreedom

Let’s see how long before they reverse this again.  Obama is hell bent on raping the constitution and this won’t end here.

  • ITS Tactical

It’s not misleading, the ATF has indeed suspended its proposed framework to ban M855 ammunition. Although, as the title of the article states, they’ve suspended the ban “for now.” The fight isn’t over, but this is a win. ~ Bryan

  • Frank Rock

“But it turns out, ATF has been working on a ban of AR-15 “green tip” ammunition for quite some time and has already issued the ban in its new, 2014 regulation guide .”

  • ITS Tactical

Frank, there’s no denying the news that the ATF had already put the ban into its new regulations, I read that too. I’m hoping that this new reversal will include a removal of that too. We’ll see what happens. I’m optimistic this win made a difference, but time will tell. ~ Bryan

  • Frank Rock

I hope so to, but I doubt it. The evidence is clear that none of these gov. agencies care what the people want, nor does this gov. itself.

  • Restmod Bennett

They’ll just try and sneak it in again later, hoping that it will go un-noticed. Or just start enforcing their already printed guide lines, at a later time since we know they are not going to print a retraction!

  • Chris Toùch

    Glenn Price moar

  • Anthony Cavinaw

Doubt that. More likely the moves in Congress to disband the ATF

  • Daniel Espinoza

Too all the shops that hyped your prices, you suck.

  • Clay Lacey

The key phraseology in the ATF press release is “at this time.” It will return.

  • Jason Banks

“Accordingly, ATF will not at this time seek to issue a final framework.”

  • Derek Ross

the atf claims the 2014 “ban” was a publishing error and intends to publish an amended version of the 2014 regs that includes the m855 ss109 and 30-06 exemptions. no ban, for now

  • Nick Harrison

No ban for now. Still cant get russian and chinese surplus, so theres that.

  • Derek Ross

in other words. they tried to sneak one in under the radar on us, and with all the heat they have taken in recent years on various activities, including but not limited to Fast and Furious, they cut and run on this issue before it led to further digging into there activities

  • Derek Ross

good (ish) for us, for now. It shows the ATF is afraid, at some level of us, and oversight from certain people in congress, and rather then be subjected to potential devestating investigations and microscope viewing, theyd rather ditch this and obviously, they will start from scratch on some other attack. Battle won, war ongoing and such

  • Benjamin Smith

    Good news, but stay vigilant!

  • Ray Murphy

…for now. Once this quiets down though, they will try again, but in more secrecy….

  • Norm Carlton

ATF will return. They didnt lose the war, just a skirmish. We better keep the resolve and prepare.

  • vettepilot427

You and the crew at ITS deserve a huge “THANK YOU” from all of us for being at the forefront of this issue and providing resources and information that we could act on.
Great job and remain ever vigilant.

  • Matthew Bustamante

Government switching to federal ammo now so they created a scare to spike prices and get rid of their stock piled ammo at premium prices #conspiracy U0001f602

  • Kevin L. Lee

I bet the sales of green paint skyrocketed during this issue! Buyers beware!

  • Meh

It’s actually a calculated plan to bankrupt gun owners by scaring them into buying overpriced ammo, then they have to sign up for Obamacare.

  • Steven Bakos

    Can have 7N6 back?

  • Kurt Schneider

And everyone who claimed that commenting is useless needs to beat your face. Open ranks, MARCH! Half-right, FACE! Front-leaning rest position, MOVE!

  • Allan Jones

Just keep your eyes open folks. This battle is won for now but the “war” rages on!! Don’t trust them for a second!!

  • Daniel Colgan

I don’t see how it’s a “victory” ; all they did was acknowledge that they forgot to update documentation.

  • Todd Hammer

The people profiting off of these situations should be cursed and lose their business. They should bottom out prices to arm everyone possible.

  • Jay Arr Ell

This means nothing. They are just trying to figure out how to do it. The reversal is just a distraction. Can’t put anything past the Nazi SS department of the BATFE.

  • DoobieEx

For now…which means prices won’t go down any time soon.

  • Eddie Lee

ATF is, without a doubt, the most criminal, corrupt and unconstitutional of all the federal “enforcement” agencies out there. Their malfeasance is astounding and their basic mandate is pretty much antithetical to freedom and the American way.

  • vettepilot427

Also, the surge in ammo prices due to the threat of this ban is not dishonest.  It is simply the result of supply and demand which is the cornerstone of a free-market system.  Furthermore, it’s not wrong for retailers to make profits, even large ones when demand increases and supply decreases (or has the potential to decrease).  After all, they made the investment first with no idea that this was coming.

The true fools are those that are not buying things NOW before something like this happens again.  I stared in amazement at folks who waited hours in line for admission to a gun show to try to find $80 PMAG’s a few years ago and who won’t buy them NOW when they’re commonly available for $18.

I don’t blame the retailer when his price increases because demand increased and supply decreased.

I also don’t pity the idiot who believes this won’t happen again and neglects to buy his commodities NOW when prices are cheap and quantities are available.

  • Joseph Johnson

    Now give back our 7n6!!!!
