We are going to continue to focus on your route from home to work and attacks to your vehicle. I want to focus on your vehicle and travels and not worry about avoiding a sucker punch on the street.
Attack recognition is a whole other animal when you talk about self defense (Tony Blauer has excellent information on physical attack recognition and response). [Read More…]
There are many types of surveillance detection and today we’ll be continuing to apply concepts and tactics used by Personal Security Detail (PSD) teams, with ways to detect static and mobile surveillance along your routes.
In our last article about Route Surveys we focused on going from home to work and we’ll be doing the same in this article.
I’m sure everyone wants to dive right into how you can ditch a “tail” and other counter surveillance techniques, but before you can do that you have to have a understanding how the surveillance process works. [Read More…]
There’s an excellent report that Walletpop.com has put together using FBI data from 17,000 local Law Enforcement agencies and neighborhoodscout.com, showing the top 25 neighborhoods in terms of violent crime.
What’s truly interesting about the approach to this data, is that these results are narrowed down into neighborhoods. Dr. Andrew Shiller from neighborhoodscout.com makes a great point when he states that “even the cities with the highest crime rates can have relatively safe neighborhoods, and thus it is less useful to generalize about an entire city.”
While Chicago is listed as the number one most dangerous neighborhood, Atlanta has the most neighborhoods in the top 25 with four.
Are you in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in America? Find out below. [Read More…]
In the following new series of articles on ITS Tactical we’ll talk about how you can apply concepts and tactics used by Personal Security Detail (PSD) teams into your daily life. Military, contractor, and private security details use these methods to move officials and VIPs safely throughout the world.
While most of the movements and tactics are very complex and require extensive training and experience, the average person can learn the basics to help protect themselves and their families.
The likelihood of you being attacked by a well trained group of terrorists is pretty unlikely. You may, however, end up as a target of opportunity for a local criminal or group of criminals. You may drive a nice car, own a nice house, or just end up a victim by being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Whatever the situation, there are things you can do on a daily basis that could prevent you from becoming a victim in the first place. You’re already at a disadvantage since you probably don’t have any intelligence on who may want to do you harm. This is where you need to be creative and think to yourself; if I were going to attack “me,” how would I do it? [Read More…]
So how many of you tactically park, that is pull forward or reverse into a parking spot?
If you don’t, I’d like to give you some reasons to consider getting in the habit of doing so and thinking defensively about the way in which you stage your vehicle.
The primary reason to park in this manner is that it just makes sense. Yes, it takes a bit of time to reverse into your driveway or a parking spot, but the benefits far outweigh the time it takes. [Read More…]
You may be asking yourself about the title of this article, is there really a way to securely dispose of sensitive documents?
As we’ve talked in length on ways you can protect your digital world, for the next few weeks we’ll be focusing on your physical world and ways you can protect yourself. While we say “physical,” we’ll really be addressing personal security.
Today we’ll be looking at some of the most common forms of disposal for sensitive documents and offering some suggestions that either may have not occurred to you, or will hopefully be a refresher on how to properly dispose of these documents. [Read More…]
Today we’re going to put out some important information about the inherent dangers of automatic garage door openers and how easily they can be bypassed. We hope that everyone takes this information to heart and spends just a few seconds to protect themselves and their property.
So what is the inherent danger? All automatic garage door openers legally require a safety release mechanism that is controlled by a grab handle. This is put into place so that if your automatic garage door opener is malfunctioning or traps someone beneath the door you can manually release and move it. [Read More…]
The latest issue of Popular Mechanics had a fantastic writeup on a battery of abusive lab tests they put some padlocks though, to see which one would come out on top.
I immediately bought the issue when I saw it on the newsstand, and was excited to learn they’d published their results online too.
They used five great testing criteria, including Shock (like from a sledgehammer), Bolt Cutters, Tensile (force to pull the shackle out), Salt Fog (effect from weather), and a Gunshot.
I would have personally liked to see more locks included as well as lock picking and bumping added to the testing, but overall it’s a great test! Suprisingly the $24 Master Lock beat out the $115 Medeco and appears to have been bulletproof.
With more than hundreds of home invasions happening every year here in the United States, we’d like to present some tips on what you can do to not only protect yourself and your family, but how to fortify your home to better resist becoming a victim.
There’s a notable difference between a burglary and a home invasion, that being you. If you’re home, it’s a home invasion. If you’re not, it’s a burglary plain and simple. Criminals don’t always know what they’re walking into during the day, but at night its a different story. Most home invasions happen between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. on weekdays and weekends.
A criminal that breaks into a residence at night is expecting a confrontation of some kind. Hopefully it will be short lived when you shoot them dead, but as we’ve mentioned before in “Dealing with Violent Confrontations” you should always avoid a confrontation if possible. This is the same in a home invasion scenario, not by using the same methods, but by using some forward thinking to deny criminals the opportunity.
Using the tips we’ll share below will help you in avoiding this kind of confrontation and better protect you and your family. [Read More…]
While listening to The Survival Podcast the other day Jack, a good friend of ours, mentioned some news he’d just found out about the security of safety deposit boxes.
It seems that the banking industry, after three years, can consider your safety deposit account abandoned (even if you’re up to date on payments) and seize your property.
They can then auction your property off for whatever they determine to be “fair market value,” and place that money into their general fund to do with as they wish. [Read More…]
