Amateur radio consists of a series of radio frequency bands designated internationally for public, non-commercial use. Various types of information can be transmitted over the bands, such as voice, video, and digital data.

A doorway to the world, amateur radio can be used to communicate with people both local and distant. Even off-planet communications are possible, as the astronauts in the International Space Station (ISS) maintain an amateur radio station!

Since the invention of radio, amateur operators — often referred to as hams — have been on the airwaves, constantly pushing the technology. Two years ago, after going through CERT and a bunch of Red Cross Training, I decided it was time to really up my firearms training.

I started with the basics of renewing my Texas CHL (Concealed Handgun License), took some private tactical handgun and rifle lessons with a USSS (United States Secret Service) firearms instructor, took a more intensive 16 Hour tactical handgun course, and did some tactical shotgun training.

Eventually I realized that while I had tactical rifle training, I did not have more traditional rifle skills. Sure I could now clear a building, I could “run & gun”, but could I take down food or a threat at a meaningful distance with a rifle? [Read More…]

Post image for Family Radio Service, An Option for Neighborhood Emergency Communications

The general public needs to be aware that cellular or PCS portable telephones may not “work” during an emergency when everyone tries to use them at once, because the system becomes “overloaded.”

CERT, Neighborhood Watch and families should consider alternative means to check on each other’s kids, elderly neighbors or keep in touch to make sure everyone is OK after the storm blows over and the telephones are out.

The Family Radio Service or FRS has utility for short range communications, as long as you understand its very significant limitations. The FCC created FRS as an unlicensed service for use by families and groups. [Read More…]

final_cert_logoI’ve now been to three CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) classes and am halfway through the training.

The education I’ve received has been enlightening to say the least, but there still a nagging in the back of my mind.

What I’m having the biggest moral dilemma with is the CERT policy of not helping someone  in need. [Read More…]

final_cert_logoI recently rogered up for CERT Training here in the D/FW area after reading about it in Neil Strauss’ book, Emergency.

The classes start in a few weeks, and I’m looking forward to helping out however I can.
