CTOMS Tourniquet Pouch and Warfighter CFAK

Today I’ll be covering two medical items from  CTOMS (Canadian Tactical and Operational Medical Solutions) the Tourniquet Pouch and Warfighter CFAK (Combat First Aid Kit)  Flat Panel.

CTOMS was established in April 2005 as a means to propagate, standardize and evolve tactical medicine in the military and law enforcement communities in Canada and to expand its appropriate attributes to remote casualty care in Search and Rescue and wilderness environments. Continue reading

Wilderness Medicine and Survival Tips

Have you ever spent the weekend enjoying a camping trip or went for a hike off the beaten path to a less traveled trail?

Perhaps you live near a state park or national forest and enjoy your off time out in areas far away from the modern world.

Let’s hope that while enjoying the great outdoors nothing serious ever happens but if it does, here are some tips to do the best you can when you have next to nothing. Continue reading

Nuking Data and Other Data Deletion Considerations

When I was in elementary school, my father and brother helped me build my first computer; I had scavenged the parts from the obsolete equipment my school was throwing out.

I had only the vaguest idea of what we were doing, but I distinctly remember firing up a word processor and finding several letters written by former teachers of mine still on the hard-drive. Unfortunately, this kind of leak is not unique.

Just yesterday, an acquaintance told me how he used to dumpster dive at a computer disposal plant and found several hard-drives from the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Unencrypted.

If one wanted to earn a profitable living as a “market researcher”, identity thief, or foreign intelligence agent, buying liquidated computer equipment or working for a photocopier leaser would be a good place to start. Recovering even so-called deleted data is relatively easy with off-the-shelf software and a little know-how.

This article attempts to first explain how data storage works, dispel some of the myths around data destruction, and then tell you how to actually blow that data into oblivion.

Roll With a MOLLE Visor Panel in Your Vehicle

As an average guy with a day job, I spend about 9% of my waking hours inside my vehicle. This is mostly driving to and from work, but also driving my family around, running errands, and other assorted tasks.

Having a preparedness mindset, I decided that some self extraction tools for my vehicle would be a good idea.

One of the tools I felt best to acquire first was a Benchmade Rescue Hook Model 7 ( previously reviewed by ITS: Cut Your Way Out in An Emergency Situation). The 7 Hook is a excellent piece of gear, but being presented with a MOLLE sheath was a problem. Over time, MOLLE attachments have become pervasive in our environment, but not in our vehicles.

There are seat back panels for HMMWV and other vehicles, but I needed the 7 Hook up front and in reach. So I contacted Jones Tactical for a solution, and we came up with the MOLLE Visor. Continue reading

Diving: Minimize Your Failure Points

Whether you are recreation diving, combat diving, technical diving, or just goofing around in the pool, there are some things to keep in mind.

In all of my years of diving, I didn’t hear the words “tighten up your rig” until I started tech diving. I spent a lot of time diving off of cattle boats, but looking back, I wish someone had mentioned what I am about to cover just a little bit sooner.

I want to give you some pointers and lay out the benefits of the pony/bailout bottle as well as a review of some “safe second” devices. This article is going to be very informative for those that have not been around a diving community much. We have some ground to cover, so I’ll jump right in. Continue reading

The Road to Independence: Rebellion that Made a New Nation

In honor of the Declaration of Independence adoption on July 4th, 1776, we thought it fitting to not only talk about the historical significance of this date, but of the long road to our country’s independence.

“The Revolution was effected before the war commenced. The Revolution was in the hearts and minds of the people.”
— Former President John Adams, 1818

The following article is a long but great read. It’s taken from the U.S. Department of State publication,  Outline of American History. Continue reading

Harvest Power like Batman with RAPS

Air Force engineers have recently developed a device dubbed RAPS (Remote Auxiliary Power System) for Special Operations troops to harvest power directly from overhead power lines.

RAPS is actually based on a Spec Ops request to create a Batman device for throwing over outdoor power lines to power/recharge batteries in communications equipment.

Much like a grappling hook, the device is thrown over a power line where it makes two connections as it’s pulled into position. One to the exposed wire and one through a razor blade that pierces the insulated wire. Once the device is correctly connected, the custom power supply converts the AC to DC for use. Continue reading
