How to Train for Running When You Have a Life

RunningLet me start off by throwing in a caveat, I’m not an elite runner.

I never ran in high school or college, nor am I truly any type of physiologist or scientist.

I have however, over the past few years, taken a bigger interest in running, combined it with my longstanding interest in learning about human performance, and believe that I have learned a few things along the way that I can share. Continue reading

Knot of the Week: Monkey’s Fist

Monkey's Fist 11For this week’s Knot of the Week, we’d like to introduce the Monkey’s Fist.

The last two weeks we’ve been discussing Decorative Knots, and while the Monkey’s Fist is often used to finish off decorative knot work, it also has another more common practical application.

Primarily the Monkey’s Fist is tied ton the end of a rope to be used as a heaving line, or a line to be thrown over distance. This heaving line could then be attached to a larger or heavier line and pulled into position. Continue reading

Military Working Dog Adoptions

Img1465We’d like to pass along a great resource for anyone considering dog adoption. Military Working Dog Adoptions helps Veteran MWD’s find homes after they’ve served in America’s Armed Forces.

Here’s what you can do to help out the MWD Adoption program further:

We’d like to pass along a great resource for anyone considering dog adoption. Veteran Military Working Dogs have always needed homes after they’ve served in America’s Armed Forces. Typically if no home can be found for these heros they’re scheduled for euthanasia.
If you would like to help out the MWD program further
CALL AND WRITE the Air Force Chief of Staff, General Norton A. Schwartz ! ASK for these Proposed Changes to the Retiring MWD Adoption Program:
1. Implement a Standardized Operating Procedure among all the services regarding MWD Adoptions.
2. Set a standardized length of time for the retiring MWD’s paperwork being processed through Lackland AFB.
3. Make it MANDATORY to list all adoption-suitable MWDs world-wide on the Lackland AFB DoD website:                                                                         http://www.lackland.af.mil/units/341stmwd/index.asp
4. Make it MANDATORY for all adopted OCONUS (OVERSEAS) MWDs to receive transport back to the U.S. via military air. Retired MWDs have no “return to home station” benefits even though for the time of their service we proclaim them as bonafide “military members”. As it now stands, retired OCONUS (OVERSEAS) MWDs must be transported at adoptive owner’s expense as a “pet”!

“It’s the Tribes, Stupid!”

Author and historian Stephen Pressfield has recently published a video blog called “War & Reality in Afghanistan.”

Pressfield makes a remarkable comparison between Alexander the Great’s Afghan campaign and our own war today, as well as offering unique insight into the underpinnings of this war on terror.

We’ve embedded the YouTube videos here so you can view all five episodes, but we’d encourage you to visit Pressfield’s blog as well.

He has continued to update his blog posts quite frequently and offers some very insightful information within each and every post.

Pressfield’s book, “Gates of Fire,” is something we all here at ITS Tactical feel should be required reading for anyone interested in any kind of military special programs. Continue reading

Find Ammunition Online Fast at the Lowest Price!

M855Ball

1/23/13 Update: AmmoEngine.com is currently offline and appears shut down.

An astute reader just sent in a great tip on a new Web site called AmmoEngine!

This site is truly awesome, it crawls the web automatically looking for the lowest prices on ammuntion and updates the site every morning around 3 a.m.

The site owner developed AmmoEngine because he was “tired of spending hours trying to pinch pennies on ammo purchases.”

Rimfire and shotgun ammo listings are not yet listed on the site, but are coming soon.

Now we have someone searching for the best deals on ammo for us while we sleep! So much for our post on online ammunition eh?

Learn How to Ascend: Part 2, Setup

Learn How to Ascend 06In this article we’ll be putting everything together and show how to connect the ascender setup to the rope.

Ascending  is arguably another one of the most dangerous procedures in climbing, so pay attention to your setup because an improper one can get you killed.

The reason it’s one of the most dangerous procedures is the fact that much like rappelling, it forces you to rely on your equipment and anchors 100%. Continue reading
