Knot of the Week Video: Whipping Natural Fiber Rope with Waxed Dental Floss

kotw-wrapping-main

In today’s Knot of the Week series I’ll be demonstrating how to prevent natural fiber rope from unravelling after it’s cut. With repeated use, natural fiber rope like the sisal rope shown in this demonstration, can become loose and lose its twist. Whipping a rope can stop unravelling and untwisting for good.

With synthetic ropes like paracord or climbing rope, fraying at its end is easy to fix by fusing it with a lighter. With natural fiber, it doesn’t fuse or melt, so whipping is mandatory. I like using waxed dental floss for this, because it’s cheap and the wax from the dental floss helps the wraps of floss to adhere together, further protecting the whipping.

You can also go a step further and tape over the floss whipping to protect it even more. If you have precut lengths of natural fiber rope, say for scouting pioneer projects, colored electrical tape is great for color coding sets of different lengths of rope. Check out the video below to learn how to whip a rope!

Ratings

Strength/Security/Stability/Difficulty

Each knot will be assigned a rating from 1-5 (1 representing the lowest score) based on the following four properties:

Strength – All knots will weaken the strength of  a rope, however, there are knots that are stronger than others. The scale here will reflect how strong the rope remains with the specified knot.

Security – The security scale refers to how well the knot will stay tied, and resist coming loose under a normal load.

Stability – Stability refers to how easily the knot will come untied under an abnormal load (i.e. the knot being pulled in a direction it was not intended to) A lower score here represents instability.

Difficulty – The lower the number, the easier a knot is to tie.

2016 ITS Tactical Muster and Skill-Set Development Excursion

muster-5-main

Now in its fifth year, we’re extremely excited to announce that registration for the 2016 ITS Muster is open!

The ITS Muster was developed as a way for us to get our hands dirty with the skills we cover and advocate here on ITS. It offers a physical aspect to the online learning we provide and allows us to meet our members in person and offer a comprehensive skill-set training curriculum, unmatched in the industry.

We gather subject matter experts in multiple disciplines to share their knowledge with you in a 5-day event that focuses on individual skill-set development, team building and a comprehensive final training exercise designed to hone your new skills. For a list of all the skills you’ll be learning at this year’s Muster and the instructors attending, click here for the details and registration information. They’re also listed a bit further down in this announcement.

Muster 4 After Action Report

We’ve been busy finalizing specifics for this year and if you’ve attended a Muster in the last four years, you’ll agree that each one has been its own unique experience. While this year will offer new, event-specific training, we’ve also developed a method that allows first-time attendees and returnees to be at the same curriculum skill level at the completion of Muster.

Identical to our previous Musters, this event is only available to our members, which are our Plank Owners, Crew Leaders and Life Members. Attendance is limited again this year and as a reminder, we’ve changed a few things recently and attending a Muster is now a requirement for becoming a Life Member during our next open enrollment period.

If you’re interested in becoming an ITS Member to attend Muster, Crew Leader is the only membership option we currently offer. Click here for details on how to join.

Muster 4 After Action Report

We have some awesome events lined up this year, which include Rappelling, Knot Tying, Land Navigation (Day & Night), Tracking, Physical Security, Communications, First Aid/Trauma Management, Red Teaming and Digital Security, Reconnaissance, Fire Building, Social Engineering, Escape from Illegal Restraint and much more! Merit badges will be earned for each discipline, provided competency is demonstrated.

Muster 4 After Action Report

As with each year, we’ve got a fantastic lineup of instructors, including John Hurth of TYR Group, Caleb Causey of Lone Star Medics, Matt Fiddler of SerePick, Uri Fridman of Red Teams, Nick Hays of Highland Solutions, Brian Green of Brian’s Backpacking Blog and of course the ITS staff. We also have some other curriculum surprises up our sleeves that you’ll just have to be there to find out about!

All of this great training takes place while spending time in the outdoors, enjoying great food and camaraderie. This will be the third year in our North Texas venue and attendees will be rooming together as a squad in the bunkhouses provided (don’t worry, we have separate accommodations for females.) Meals are provided, so think of this as an all-inclusive event. Muster represents some of the best instruction around; this year will be one you don’t want to miss!

Here’s some photos from Muster IV:

For those interested in more of what last year looked like, check out our AAR of the 2015 Muster. We’re truly excited for our fifth year of Muster and we hope to see you out there!

Knot of the Week Video: How to Tie a Monkey’s Fist to Weight a Throwing Line

kotw-monkeys-fist-main

While the Monkey’s Fist is often used to finish off decorative knot work or make fancy keychains, there are actually more practical applications that we’ll be going over in today’s Knot of the Week. Hopefully it will also convince you of its place amongst your knotty repertoire.

The Monkey’s Fist is primarily tied on the end of a rope to weight it and add momentum during its flight, this is often called a heaving line. If you’ve ever tried to throw a rope on its own, you’ll know it can’t get very far without a weighted end. Once a heaving line is thrown, it could then be attached to a larger or heavier line and pulled back into position. A good example of this would be hanging a bear bag to keep your food off the ground and obviously away from bears.

A Monkey’s Fist was historically used to run a line for ship-to-ship operations due to the fact that it could be tied with a weighted core inserted and endure many tosses back and forth. As you’ll see in the video below, I demonstrate how to add a weighted core, which can be anything from a golf ball to a rock you find lying around.

U.S. Navy photo by Airman Peter Carnicelli (RELEASED)

Currently the U.S. Navy uses Shot Line, which resembles Dummy Cord, during ship-to-ship transfers for UNREP (Underway Replenishment.) The Shot Line is connected to a projectile housed in an adapter at the end of an M14 and fired by a blank round, to be received by the opposing ship’s crew.

A Monkey’s Fist can also be used as a stopper knot, to stop a knot from passing through a hole, or even as a pull. I used a Monkey’s Fist with Paracord to replace the pull handle on my attic ladder.

School’s in Session: Why Arming Teachers is the Most Logical Option

arming-teachers-03

There are many hot button issues these days, but few compare to the subject of arming our teachers. I encourage honest dialogue about the threat our schools face.

If administrators and faculty truly have the best interest of their students in mind, why wouldn’t they address this subject?

Allow People to Choose

arming-teachers-04

I don’t think the solution should be forced and I believe a better approach is removing the current restrictions and replacing them with policy at the school level. Allow the individual administrators to discuss the issue and decide the best course of action. However, I also believe part of the discussion needs to be about protecting life and the best manner to do so with the smallest financial impact.

Administrators are quick to denounce this plan, but fail to replace it with a suitable substitute. We already have laws prohibiting carry of firearms, armed resources officers at many schools and responding officers patrolling in the area.

Murder is Already Against the Law

arming-teachers-01

Laws against homicide already exist, there are numerous laws regarding the negligent, accidental and intentional death of another human being. We stand tall as we look to the stars and admire how noble and civilized we are as a society because of these laws.

All too often, people are quick to pat themselves on the back without acknowledging the actual effects or realities. In this case, homicide is a serious crime. Most adults grew up in an era where they were taught right from wrong. How wrong it was to intentionally hurt, much less kill another human being. Yet, we still see incredibly high homicide rates for such a civilized nation. Why won’t administrators address this issue? The answer is simply that they can’t.

Evil Finds a Way

arming-teachers-06

It’s true, an individual who’s committed to harming another will find a way to do so. Whether it’s a firearm, knife, vehicle or even a bomb, evil always finds a way. The current belief that we can regulate evil is as realistic as man being able to fly.

Once we can move past this issue, the next issue to address is laws prohibiting carrying of a firearm on school property. I’d like to see a case where an individual who was committed to carrying out a heinous crime, approached a school campus and realized he couldn’t because of “no firearms” sign. Where has that deterred crime?

Armed resources officers have seen a positive impact and I for one am glad to see them in our schools. One article I read denouncing the arming of teachers claimed that due to the size of a school campus, an armed teacher would most likely not be able to get to the scene quickly enough to make a difference. I suppose there could be some truth to this statement and if so, it would reduce the effectiveness of a SRO as well. Unless they developed teleportations capabilities, they’re bound by the same laws of physics as everyone else.

Pizza or Police, Who’s the Fastest?

arming-teachers-02

Response time is another comment I hear thrown around as rebuttal to arming teachers. I agree that an armed response from a trained professional is preferred, but the time it takes to get that response could very well be too late.

Referring back to the SRO and having to cover the ground of a large campus, now add the time it takes for the call to be made, officer to be notified, time to travel and the size of the campus. Even the best response times will still be measured in minutes when a critical incident is happening in seconds. Eventually we circle back to arming teachers.

Free Market to the Rescue

arming-teachers-05

Why is this such a terrible idea? Better yet, why would an American citizen be denied their inalienable right to defend themselves just because they occupy a physical location?

True, these events are incredibly stressful, unpredictable and quick, but is that enough justification to throw our arms up and say we can’t do it? I believe there are challenges; concealing everyday isn’t as easy as one may believe and training to be ready takes time and resources.

However, if an individual is willing to take it upon themselves to undergo training and invest in concealment equipment, why should we restrict them from carrying on a school campus? The idea that all hell will break loose because someone carried onto school property, reminds me of the initial argument for the original concealment laws. How so many were crying that it would be bedlam and mayhem with blood running down the streets.

The only blood I see running, runs down the hands of those who willingly deny the most basic of freedoms. The freedom to protect oneself and others.
