Combat Medical Systems Announces Combat Gauze XL

Eric’s been out at the SOMA Convention (Special Operations Medical Association) this past weekend checking out the show and grabbed some photos of the new Combat Gauze XL by Combat Medical Systems.

Developed with feedback from the field, where medics were having to use more than one package of Combat Gauze in certain situations and wanted a larger version. The new XL contains 4″ x 4 yds. of Z-Folded Combat Gauze w/ x-ray detectable strip. The standard MIL/LE (green package) of Combat Gauze contains 3″ x 4 yds of Z-Folded Combat Gauze w/ x-ray detectable strip.

Despite the increased width of the XL, the vacuum sealed package is the same overall size as the standard MIL/LE package. Continue reading

Understanding and Employing Man’s Oldest Weapon

Not long after early men hit each other with fists, they picked up the first weapon, a stick.

Typically when I talk about weapon use, it takes the logical progressing of selection, carry, deployment and use. For early man, the idea of selecting the perfect stick was more simplified than it is these days. They had the good fortune of not being subjected to tactical marketing.

I was lucky enough, at least in my opinion, to actually hit people with sticks early in my Law Enforcement career and see what worked and what didn’t. During my career, I carried the Koga Stick, PR-24, and several different size ASPS. Each stick had its pros and cons, mostly due to carry issues. I’ve continued to be a fan of the straight stick, a tool that in my honest opinion continues to be misunderstood, underutilized, and overlooked. Continue reading

Remembering Pearl Harbor and Never Forgetting

Pearl Harbor Attack

I think FDR said it best one of his famous quotes: “December 7, 1941, A date which will live in Infamy… No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people, in their righteous might, will win through to absolute victory.

Let us never forget the hardships that our nation and its warriors faced this day 70 years ago, or what today’s warriors are up against. Please take time today to remember what our country went through and those we lost.

Stay Alive! Survival Skills You Need

Stay Alive! Survival Skills You Need

John D. McCann, whom you may recall has recently been a contributor recently ITS, has just released a new book called Stay Alive! Survival Skills You Need.

You may remember towards the beginning days of ITS when I mentioned the Mini Survival Kits I built based on John’s first book, Build The Perfect Survival Kit. He’s been one of my favorite authors for a long time and I was stoked to have him contribute to ITS Tactical.

I’m even more excited about this new book, as it keeps in line with what I love about John as an author. He takes a no-nonsense, anal-retentive look at survival as a whole and breaks it down for everyone to understand. I hope he doesn’t get upset with my description of his writing, but it’s something I can totally relate to and fully appreciate.

Stay Alive! Survival Skills You Need

With his first book, John delved deep into each item of what you need in your Survival Kits and why it’s there in the first place; from the mini kit all the way up to the truck-sized kit. In John’s new book he takes that same analytical approach to the actual skills you need to survive.

Just mentioning the different chapters will give you an idea of the breadth of John’s information.

  • The Survivor Mentality
  • The Indispensable Survival Kit
  • Knives & Tools for Survival
  • Fire & Light – Survival Assets
  • Shelter & Protection from the Elements
  • Water Collection & Purification
  • Signaling for Help
  • Navigate Your Way Back
  • Food to Sustain Energy
  • Wilderness Hazards & Safety
  • Final Thoughts & Resources

Each chapter goes into detail with gorgeous photos and diagrams to explain exactly what John’s trying to teach. I particularly like the sidebar “tips” and DIY information that’s near and dear to what we do here on ITS.

Stay Alive is a must read and a tremendous resource that should be on everyone’s shelf. I’ll leave you with a great quote from Dave Canterbury, who wrote the forward.

Too many survival books are simply cut and paste toilet paper, taken from age-old military manuals that catered to soldiers, that emphasize the use of issue-type items for emergency use. Stay Alive! Survival Skills You Need is packed with information on common everyday items that civilians have access to and can use to build a great kit and how to use those items to keep them alive!

Check out Stay Alive! Survival Skills You Need via Amazon and be sure to head on over to John’s Website where you can also pick up the book and supplies to build your own kits.

Panteao Productions: Revolutionizing the Instructional DVD Market

Not only is Panteao Productions putting out some incredible instructional DVDs, but they’re producing them at an unbelievable rate! It almost seems like there’s a new one coming out each week with a different well known industry instructor.

What’s also unique about what Panteao brings to the table with their instructional DVDs, is that you can sign up for a monthly membership at $17.95 or a full year for $150 and stream anything and everything online without having to commit to purchasing each DVD.

Despite us having a few of Panteao’s DVDs here at the shop, I’m seriously considering signing up for the annual online subscription. When you take into account all the training you’re getting for $150, it sure makes it worth it compared to traveling to a class. Watching a DVD or online instruction is never going to replace hands-on training, but I know I’ve learned quite a few things from the DVDs I’ve watched. Continue reading

Crocheting and Knitting Operation Gratitude Scarves for Our Troops

Idle hands have been nowhere in sight around the ITS household and most days it feels pretty good to stay busy. The majority of you in the tactical realm are consistently keeping your hands busy so I’m confident you can relate.

I’m almost always crocheting something in my down time, so what better way to keep my hands busy than to make something that will go directly to our troops!

You may remember some chatter on the ITS Facebook Page back in September about participating in the Operation Gratitude 2011 Fall/Winter Scarf Project. Some of you were already familiar with Operation Gratitude and responded that you were ready to join me in making scarves for our men and women in uniform around the world. Continue reading

Why Law Enforcement is just as Trainable in Combat Life Saving Skills as our Military

After returning from my overseas tour, I was given an assignment within the training unit at my agency. It didn’t take long before I realized that there were some shortfalls to the First Aid and Self First Aid program we were offering.

The most outstanding concern was the lack of training concerning the use and deployment of a tourniquet. After taking a good look at our program, I proposed a lesson plan, which included the purpose and use of the tourniquet.  It was approved after a short review and the trend began. Slowly, I was able to affect the entire agency, by exposing them to tourniquet training.

This is when I realized the enormous communication gap between our Military and Law Enforcement agencies. I began a personal campaign to bring attention to the fact that our soldiers (young as they may be) are considered trainable in combat life saving skills by our government and most of the Law Enforcement agencies in our country consider this type of training,”out of the realm or scope” and perhaps too difficult.

Pants, Socks, Boots: Does the Order you Dress in Really Matter?

Pants Socks Boots

I would argue yes, the order does matter. Something that’s been ingrained in me since my days in BUD/s is the order in which I dress.

As I was getting dressed this morning, putting my pants on first, I thought I’d write about why we were taught back in the day to dress in a certain order.

Pants, Socks, Boots

The reasoning is this; if you’re suddenly awoken in the middle of the night and have to move out, that muscle memory of putting your pants on first means that you’re somewhat protected from the elements if that’s all you have time to put on. Especially if you’re going commando.

Next is socks, which I feel don’t necessarily stand on their own. If you have to move out and you’ve got pants on socks on, yes there’s some protection on your feet, but it can be easier to move barefoot than it can be with socks in certain situations.

With boots being the last thing on the list, you’ve got enough to be able to run, move efficiently and evade if necessary. Of course the elements have a lot to do with this methodology, as keeping your core warm is more important than your legs.

David Guttenfelder / Associated Press

I’ve always been able to see the reasoning behind why we were taught this though and granted it had a lot to do with the time constraints we were under at BUD/s to get our gear on and move out to the next evolution. That’s not to discredit this information though and hopefully you can see the value in it too.

This doesn’t necessarily have to apply to a soldier either, which is why I still do this. If something awakens me in the middle of the night, I’ve always got a pair of pants next to me just in case. More than likely though I’d just grab my gun and negotiate the threat, but at least my pants are there if I need them.

I also wanted to bring up this information to get you thinking about situations that might come up while you’re sleeping. Apart from a break-in, there’s also fires to consider and whether your evacuation plan requires clothing. If it doesn’t, it should. Especially with the winter upon us, having to climb out of a window on short notice without clothing to protect you from the elements isn’t ideal.

Following this will also ensure you don’t stumble out of a bunker with pink boxers on like the soldier above, despite how awesome that is!

What do you think, does the order you dress in really matter?

How to Trim the Strap on your G-Shock Watch

DIY G-Shock Watch Band Trim

The straps on G-Shocks can sometimes be a bit too long for the average person. That’s especially true of my GW-5600J, to the point where they stick out and catch on the cuff’s of my shirts and long sleeves.

I posted a question on a popular watch forum to ask if anyone ever trimmed their straps, partly because I was curious to know how many other pencil-wristed G-Shock wearers were having the same problem and partly to see how many people were willing to take a knife to their beloved Gs.

To my surprise, the resounding response was “yes”, followed by “just go ahead and cut it already”. There were varying methods and tools recommended for doing it, ranging from razor blades to scissors. The problem was, I didn’t just want to hack off the end of my watch strap and have it look all gnarly or rough, I wanted to shorten it but make it look like it was bought that way.

With my mind made up, I set the wheel in motion. Enough talk, on with the cutting…

Victim: Atomic Solar Mudman

The strap is just a little too long and would be much better if I trimmed off about one inch (2.5cm). No jokes about trimming my hairy arms please 🙂

I’m going to use a straight edge safety razor. I’m using the rounded edge of my kitchen cutting surface for this in order to keep the cut open as I slice into it, it will help stop the razor blade getting pinched. Decide where to make the cut… commit to it… cut!

DIY G-Shock Watch Band Trim

The first cut is made and it has the classic shiny edge that none of us wants to end up with, but we’ll fix that later.

DIY G-Shock Watch Band Trim

I’m going to use the safety razor again to make two smaller cuts on the corners to trim off some of the excess and save myself some filing time with the emery board.

DIY G-Shock Watch Band Trim

Now that the heavy work has been done, it’s time to shape the corners. I’m going to use an emery board to round the corners into the desired shape.

DIY G-Shock Watch Band Trim

Ok, I’ve got the two corners nicely rounded – the emery board worked great!

DIY G-Shock Watch Band Trim

Now I want to add a small bevel all the way around the end of the strap to try and make it blend in with the rest of the strap.

DIY G-Shock Watch Band Trim

The end of the strap is now nicely rounded and beveled to match the rest of the strap — I could stop here and it would be just fine — but you know I can’t do that.

DIY G-Shock Watch Band Trim

I need to polish/smooth off the slight roughness left behind by the emery board. In the past I’ve found that a pair of jeans can buff things up pretty well, so I’m going to see if my jeans will do the trick.

DIY G-Shock Watch Band Trim

Well what do you know, the jeans worked great! The end is polished just to the point where it matches the non-shiny surface of the rest of the strap. I think the end result is awesome, I’m definitely happy with it.

DIY G-Shock Watch Band Trim

That’s it! I think you’ll all agree that this is a great way to avoid having a nasty, shiny end to a trimmed resin strap – it was easy to do as well. It probably took me a whole lot longer to take these photos and write this up than it would to just cut the strap and clean it up — but I thought it would be fun for you all to see the steps. Hope you enjoyed it, now go fix those long straps on all your G-Shocks!
