One Man’s Trash: Does the Garbage You Put on the Curb Make You a Target for Theft?

Security_Trash

We’ve shared many home security tips in the past here at ITS, from everything on how to prevent garage door break-ins, to how to protect against a Home Invasion.

While what you do with your garbage doesn’t seem very high up on a list of potential home security tips, I assure you it’s more important than you think.

Buying Time

I like to say that all security is “buying time.” A determined criminal WILL gain access to your home, given enough time and opportunity. These two variables are key; time and opportunity. The secret to securing your home is all about making it a hard target. The way this is done is by taking steps to create the appearance of a home without value or one that appears difficult to gain entry into. The goal is for the potential thief to abandon their efforts and move on to a softer target, or one that’s less secure.

Your first line of home defense against a thief is curb appeal. It’s the first thing a potential home buyer notices and guess what? It’s the first thing a thief notices as well. Amongst all the questions running through their head, one of the first they’re no doubt asking themselves will be, “Is it worth it?”

This can be a hard question for them to answer without gathering some intel on your home and brings me to the subject of this article.

One Man’s Trash…

If you leave your TV, surround sound and expensive electronics boxes intact, visible and on the curb, you’re making the potential thief’s job remarkably easy. This goes for boxes and bags from high-end clothing stores or anything of value. By nothing more than a simple drive-by recon on trash days, a thief can cherry pick targets to their heart’s desire.

The root of the issue is the identification of disposable income and the way people live. Yes, we all buy electronics and clothing, there’s nothing wrong with that. However, most people don’t forgo paying their bills in order to buy these things and the astute thief can reverse engineer that information you leave on the curb and figure out what other kinds of goods may be inside.

It also might not be just the one box you leave on the curb, they could have been taking notes for months while scouting a neighborhood and have seen the other boxes you’ve previously left on the curb.

What To Do

Don’t discount the intelligence of thieves, they’re crafty, cunning and more dangerous than most give them credit for. Desperation, which is a common characteristic of the home burglar, equals danger for you and your family. Be it debt or a drug problem, a thief is looking for that smash & grab soft target with goods he can sell quickly for cash. Telegraphing what you have available inside with the boxes you leave by the curb, is just making his job that much easier.

cardboard-boxes-stacked-01

Invest in a box cutter and a roll of cheap duct tape, the cost is minor compared to the trade off. Simply break down your boxes by cutting the tape, fold them over to hide the logos of the companies and tape them into a bundle. Your garbage men will thank you and it will even make it easier to carry them to the curb or fit in the recycling bin.

It’s a great habit to get into and spending just a little bit of time on the front end, will increase your overall security footprint and help make your home a harder target.

Get Your Trauma Priorities Straight: Mindset, Education, Then Tools

mindset-education-tools-main-02

Over the past several years I’ve been asked the same questions time and time again, though my answers still haven’t changed. The most commonly asked questions are, “What should I put in my Medical Kit?” or, “What IFAK is the best?” A few years ago I wrote one of my first articles and posted it on the Lone Star Medics Blog. It’s been shared and discussed over the years, but the information still stands firm today and in fact, more so now than back in 2014 when I wrote it.

The original article basically lists four questions and the corresponding answers.

  1. What’s your daily activity or mission?
  2. What’s the environment in which you’ll be conducting that daily activity or mission?
  3. What’s your current level of training?
  4. How many people are you immediately responsible for?

I’m going to be very blunt with my answers here and tell it the way it is. Meaning, that if you pick up a bit of passion, anger and truthfulness, then you understand where I’m coming from.

Mindset

If you have to ask, “What items should I keep in my Medical Kit?” or “Which IFAK is the best?” The answer is “EDUCATION!” Yes, I’m yelling. When you ask me these questions you’re telling me two things. First off, you don’t have a clue what you’re doing. Second, you probably don’t have a clue how to use a med kit even if you had one.

I’m not saying that you couldn’t figure it out eventually, but let’s be really clear about things. Waiting until a family member is lying in the ditch with a car flipped upside-down on the side of the highway is not the time to start trying to figure out how to use your med kit. Waiting until your fellow Officer is bleeding out in an alley is not the time to start trying to “figure it out.” I commend you on your efforts and the mere fact that you at least have med gear. However, your priorities are flawed. Let’s focus on three things and remember them in this order: Mindset, Education and Tools.

Having the correct mindset creates the foundation for accomplishing a task. By becoming educated, we learn how to identify the problems associated with that task and create solutions. The tools are just there to make completing the task easier. Notice the order I said all that; mindset, education, tools. In every defensive tactician course I’ve attended (talking about firearms, edge weapons or hand-to-hand combatives,) the very first thing the instructor discusses is mindset.

Here are three things I want you to think about when building your own self-preservation foundation. In order to combat evil, you need to be educated in several subjects. I’m going to stay in my lane here and suggest you discuss which defensive techniques are best with a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in that arena. However, I’ll discuss things from a field or tactical medical perspective.

Education

Recognize the fact that evil does exists and that accidents do happen. You value your life and the lives of those around you. You take responsibility for providing immediate safety and care for yourself and loved ones by not relying upon others to do so when evil strikes or accidents happen. Seek out the appropriate education and training so that when evil arrives or accidents happen, you’re prepared and ready.

During your medical education and training, you’ll learn basic anatomy and physiology, how the body’s systems work together and which ones are more important than others. You’ll learn different techniques on how and when to appropriately identify and treat various injuries and illnesses. Although it may seem obvious, you’ll learn which tools are the most effective and efficient at assisting you in treating the sick or injured. Depending on the instructor, they may also offer their professional advice and opinions on different tools available.

Tools

Having the right tool for the right job does make life easier. Can you make a screwdriver hammer a nail through a board? Sure! Would an actual hammer be a much better solution? Absolutely! So then why not make life easier and use quality equipment and the right tool for the job. We’re only talking about life or death here.

When deciding on which tools are right for you, it’s best not to base your decision on price or unsubstantiated reviews, but more so on the recommendations of Subject Matter Experts. Tools don’t work without the knowledge and training to maximize them effectively and efficiently. Remember, you’ll be using these tools under stress in less than favorable conditions. It only makes sense to use the best tools available to help solve your problems and complete the task.

The takeaway is that you need to have the right mindset, the right education and the right tools, in that order. In our society of instant gratification and desire for quick results, it’s easier to go online to some virtual warehouse and with a few quick clicks of the mouse, have your false “fix it now” security blanket tool on its way to your doorstep. A very wise mentor of mine in the 212 MASH once told me, “We treat our patient, not our equipment.”

Editor-in-Chief’s Note: Caleb Causey is a good friend, ITS Life Member and the owner / director-of-training for Lone Star Medics; a field and tactical medical training company. He’s been a medic for over 15 years in field and tactical medicine, having served in the US Army as a Combat Medic with multiple deployments. He also has experience being assigned to a SWAT team as their medic during his time at a local Fire Department. Knot of the Week Video: Join Fishing Line with the Blood Knot

kotw-blood-knot-main

On today’s Knot of the Week we’re continuing our Fishing Knots with the Blood Knot, which is primarily used for joining two sections of monofilament line together. You may already know different ways to join line together, like the Double Fisherman’s Knot, so why choose the Blood Knot?

The Double Fisherman’s Knot is a considerably strong knot and holds securely. In fact, it’s stronger and more secure than the Blood Knot. What gives the Blood Knot the advantage is not only its ability to join similar sized lines, but also different diameter lines.

A good example of this is Fly Fishing, where you may have to create a fly-casting leader with smaller diameter line. A Nail Knot might be a better application just for Fly Fishing, but the idea here is that the Blood Knot can do dual duty.

Don’t use this knot for anything other than monofilament fishing line. The Double Fisherman’s Knot works much better for joining rope, as the Blood Knot tends to pull apart.

Blood Knot » Fishing Knots

(Strength: 4/Secure: 4/Stability: 4/Difficulty: 1See below for what these ratings mean.

Ratings

Strength/Security/Stability/Difficulty

Each knot will be assigned a rating from 1-5 (1 representing the lowest score) based on the following four properties:

Strength – All knots will weaken the strength of  a rope, however, there are knots that are stronger than others. The scale here will reflect how strong the rope remains with the specified knot.

Security – The security scale refers to how well the knot will stay tied, and resist coming loose under a normal load.

Stability – Stability refers to how easily the knot will come untied under an abnormal load (i.e. the knot being pulled in a direction it was not intended to) A lower score here represents instability.

Difficulty – The lower the number, the easier a knot is to tie.

The Whole Story: Law Enforcement’s Difficult Task of Gathering the “Truth”

law-enforcement-truth-01

As a former Law Enforcement Officer, I can tell you that traditional media and social media are the absolute worst ways to gather information about anything. Especially during an active emergency situation or investigation. An analogy I would often use to explain my job as an Officer was that I was just a reporter with a gun, that could also take you to jail. I rarely reported the exact truth when conducting an investigation, as there’s almost no way to do so. I can already hear some of my old cop buddies gasping, but this is an accurate statement, so hear me out.

When a Police Officer or Sheriff’s Deputy arrives on a scene, they’re usually arriving after the fact. They must gather separate versions of the “truth.” What I mean by this is that different versions of a story will nearly always be told. The Officer/Deputy will first speak to the reporting party, usually the victim.

The victim is just that, one who’s been victimized. They’re upset and usually angry; they’ve been done wrong and want whoever did them wrong to be located, arrested and punished. They’ll shape the story into how they feel it happened and usually shape it to make the suspect look as guilty as possible. This is usually the first version of the “truth.”

law-enforcement-truth-04

The second version we seek and collect is that of the suspect. This is almost always a very different version than was given by the victim. The suspect will try and deny or justify their actions to the victim. At times, even more of the “truth” is afforded to the Officer/Deputy by witnesses. The witnesses’ “truth” varies depending on whether their loyalty is with the victim or the suspect and on some occasions, it’s neither. Most often, even if their loyalty is with the victim or suspect, their version of the “truth” will be slightly different.

On rare occasions, there’s only one witness who saw what happened; only one person to give the Officer/Deputy an account of what happened. If this witness isn’t the victim or the suspect, it’s usually an accurate report. This can also cause problems for the sole witness, as there’s no one else to give their version; no victim, no suspect, they’re all alone. They can often be labeled as a suspect very quickly by individuals not involved with the situation.

In addition to reports, the Officer/Deputy is also collecting any physical evidence. Many times, this shows a different version of the “truth” that’s been reported by all parties. If not altered or tampered with, it’s usually the most accurate.

With all of this, the Officer/Deputy collects and records what I call “the best version of the Truth” they’re able to come up with. Are there mistakes in LE reports? Absolutely! Are mistakes put there on purpose? Absolutely not. Most Officers go out and do the very best they can with what they’ve been given.

The Media

law-enforcement-truth-02

If the situation is serious in nature, the media usually gets involved. If it’s bad enough, they’ll usually start trying to gather their own version of the story while the investigation is still ongoing. Everyone knows it’s standard procedure for the investigating Law Enforcement Agency not to comment, or release much information while an investigation is still active.

For this reason, the media will speak to anyone who claims to be a witness and again, different versions of the “truth” are tossed into the already cluttered, cloudy and ever dissolving truth. After the regular news media outlets, social media will usually pick it up. Here’s where the official “keyboard experts” come out of the woodwork. These are usually people who’ve never worked in Law Enforcement, but haven’t missed an episode of CSI.

They’re quick to let all the world know that Law Enforcement is doing a terrible job and to inform us all how it should be done. They also usually know someone who was there, but when pressed can never name that someone. They’ll offer their version of the “truth” that usually ends up being the absolute furthest thing from what actually happened. These complete and utter jackwagons are the ones that cause the most damage, spreading false information for all to see.

law-enforcement-truth-03

When asked for my thoughts on a situation, crime or Officer involved incident, my response is usually the same, “I wasn’t there when it happened, so I can’t comment or draw a conclusion.” I’ll especially refrain from commenting when it’s a use of force situation. No one knows, except the Officer(s) involved, exactly what happened. It’s not our business to cast judgment or say, “Well if it was me, I would’ve done it like this or that. I would’ve used a whiffle ball bat. Blah, blah, blah.”

This is the worse thing to say or put out for others to read. You can’t say what you would do because you weren’t there and you didn’t experience the pain, fear and thoughts of never seeing your loved ones again. Usually the people saying these type of things would tuck tail and run the other way if put in a life-threatening situation.

I hope reading this helps some people stop, think and not cast judgment the next time they’re reading what some “keyboard expert” has informed all of Facebook about. It’s usually according to a friend of their cousin, barber, mechanic’s second cousin or pool cleaner’s mother, anyhow. Keep in mind that the media also relies on ratings and can make situations seem more dramatic than they are.

It’s best to keep calm and let the people who are doing what they get paid to do finish their job. “The best version of the truth,” will be put forward to the court for a judge or jury to decide what actually happened. Many times, this is where the “truth” really gets twisted! But we can save that topic for the future.

I believe in practicing what you preach, so my company, BCPK9, offers our assistance to any Law Enforcement agency that contacts us and requests help. When asked how much we charge to come work our dogs, our reply is always the same, nothing. However, if it’s far from our area a donation is encouraged to cover fuel/meal expenses. If you have any questions about this or any K9 training, you can reach me at [email protected]

Knot of the Week Video: Quickly Secure A Fishing Hook with the Palomar Knot

kotw-palomar-main

On today’s Knot of the Week we’re continuing our Fishing Knots with the Palomar Knot. It’s one more fishing knot for the toolbox, or rather the tackle box, that can come in handy while fishing or in a survival situation. Used to secure most any kind of fishing line to a swivel or hook, including traditional monofilament, the Palomar Knot is nearly impervious to being pulled out.

Last week we went over the Modified Clinch Knot and some mentioned that the Palomar was their go-to fishing knot and that it was stronger. Strength ratings for the Palomar are the same as the Modified Clinch Knot, but the Palomar is harder to untie. You don’t really need to worry much about untying a fishing line anyway though, you’d just cut off the fishing line and tie it again. I do agree that the Palomar can be quicker to tie though and that’s certainly something to consider.

Plus, your fishing line has a greater chance of breaking before either of these knots fails due to strength. If your line does break, you’re likely to find your Palomar Knot still tied to the hook.

Palomar Knot » Fishing Knots

(Strength: 3/Secure: 4/Stability: 3/Difficulty: 1See below for what these ratings mean.
