When Nature Calls: 15 Outdoor Tips for Your Next Adventure

Adventures into the great outdoors can be a wonderful escape from the day-to-day grind, but these outings can occasionally bring challenges with them as well. Today we’re presenting some tips for everything from sleeping in the cold, to making your own tools and gear.

survival-tips-01

Carry A Road Map to Supplement a Topographic Map

When navigating with a compass, topographic maps can be invaluable. With their contour lines and other pertinent information, they’re excellent for orienteering. While topographic maps have their strengths, a road map or road atlas can also handy for dead reckoning. They can be easier to come by and are updated more often.

This is especially handy for use in rural areas to supplement to your topographic map. Remember, two is one and one is none.

Wear Dress Socks to Reduce Blisters

For those that seem to constantly deal with blisters, consider slipping on a pair of dress socks before donning your outer socks. This can aid in reducing blisters and other foot problems.

The inner dress sock sticks to your feet, acting like moleskin for your entire foot and allowing friction between the two socks versus your foot and the outer sock. Ensure that your dress socks are wool-based rather than cotton. Remember, cotton is rotten.

Make Your Own DIY Rear Bag for Your Rifle

Using two tall boot socks, you can make a great shooting rest for the buttstock of your rifle during precision shooting. It will help reduce the movement of the rifle and can elevate it to a more comfortable shooting position.

To make your own, fill one sock with Airsoft BBs and tie it closed. Place the sock with the BBs into the other boot sock and voila! You’ve got an instantly adjustable monopod for use in the prone. Just squeeze the bag with your non shooting hand to lower your sights or loosen for more elevation.

survival-tips-03

Place Your Sleeping Mat Inside Your Bivvy

Most of us that use sleeping mats are all too familiar with waking up in the middle of the night, finding ourselves off the mat and sleeping on the cold, hard ground.

Placing your sleeping mat inside your bivvy prevents you from rolling off your pad and can actually help stop you from rolling at all.

Tape DOPE to Your Rifle

DOPE, or Data On Previous Engagement, is always a good thing to have with your rifle. This information allows you to adjust your rifle to fire accurately at various ranges.

Taping this information to the inboard side of your rifle stock allows you to have a low-key and quick reference to adjust your scope or sights. Make sure the adjustments are from “all the way left or down.” This means that in order to change your range on the rifle accurately, move your adjustments all the way down then count the clicks up until you reach the amount dictated on your dope card.

Plan Eating and Drinking for Energy

When it’s cold outside and you’d like to sleep the whole night through, eat right before sleeping. The digestive process will cause your body to generate more heat and help keep you warm throughout the night.

Conversely, if you need to be up at an odd hour and be awake for something like guard duty or stoking a fire, drink water before bed. The need to use the bathroom will help wake you up and keep you awake for your task.

survival-tips-02

Ninja-fy Your Water Bladder

Hydration bladders are great for keeping water in your pack for those longer hikes, but any air trapped inside the bladder can create a noisy, sloshing sound.

After filling your bladder, invert it so the hydration tube is on the top and squeeze or suck out the excess air. This will stop the sloshing and create a vacuum to keep the bladder air free.

Keep Your Water From Freezing

When you’re in cold environments, any standing water is at risk for freezing. The water in your hydration bladder may avoid this due to your body heat, but the large surface area of the bladder’s tube makes it particularly susceptible to freezing. Keeping your hydration tube empty, by blowing a bit of air back into the tube, can prevent frozen water from accumulating.

In addition, sleeping with your water at the foot of your sleeping bag is a good idea if you want to be able to make that hot coffee in the morning, as your body heat will help keep the inside air temperature above freezing.

Check Your Campsite Before Setting Up

After selecting your campsite, look around the area for hazards and other unknowns. Are there game trails that bring mountain lions, bears or a particularly scrappy raccoon past your site?

Consider environmental changes that might occur during your stay. Is it going to become a swamp if it rains, or will any branches above your site snap and fall during a heavy wind? Look carefully for where water runoff might have already occurred or where the contours of your campsite could allow it to run. These are just a few of the factors to consider when selecting your site.

survival-tips-04

Use an MRE Heater To Warm Your Sleeping Bag

If it’s extremely cold outside and you’re dreading getting into that frigid sleeping bag, you can pre-game it by putting in an activated MRE heater to warm up your bag prior to getting in.

Be sure to dump out all the excess water prior to putting it in your bag, so you’re not sleeping on a cold, wet spot all night. Also ensure to remove it prior to sleeping to avoid being burned by the heater. A nalgene full of hot water can also work well for this purpose.

Do Your Dishes with Dirt

While it may seem counter-intuitive, you can use dirt to scour your dishes clean. The abrasiveness of the dirt makes it great for cleaning off caked-on food and oils.

Dirt can also help get stains off your hands. Be sure to rinse well or your next meal might taste like kitty litter.

Make Your Own Lightweight Stalking Shoes

Using some spray-on Plasti Dip, you can create some inexpensive, lightweight camp/stalking shoes. These are similar to commercial available items to move in quietly when hunting. Simply put on a pair of thick wool socks, spray or dip them in Plasti Dip and let them dry.

It’s probably a good idea to wrap your foot in plastic wrap prior to putting the Plasti Dip on to avoid any harmful chemicals or skin reactions. Once they’re dry, you’ll have an insulated, light weight, thin-soled shoe.

survival-tips-06-01

Use Your Spent Brass as a Tool

You can smash your already-fired brass into non-marring maintenance tools for your weapons and gear. Flatten the throat of the brass casing into a tool to adjust your elevation by friction-fitting it over the front sight.

AK owners can use the bottom of already-fired brass as a non-marring drift for your front sight. These are just a few possibilities for spent brass and the only limit is your imagination. #TrenchArt

Always Remember Horse, Saddle, Then Rider

Whenever you stop for the day, take care of your transportation, your gear and finally yourself; in that order. If your transportation is mainly walking, your main area of concern is taking care of your boots and feet. You won’t be able to do much with your feet covered in blisters, or rotting off after being submerged in water.

After you’ve taken care of your boots and feet, move on to the things that keep you moving and alive. Your gear should be cleaned and mended before you start eating or cleaning yourself. Keeping your gear maintained like this ensures you’ll always be able to depend on it.

Above All Else, Mind Over Matter

Especially in survival situations, maintaining a positive mental attitude can make all the difference. You probably don’t enjoy walking for 8 hours with a backpack in the pouring rain uphill both ways, but it can be necessary depending on your situation.

Keeping a positive attitude is really the determining factor between enjoying something and hating every moment of it. Just remember, it’s always about mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it don’t matter.

Checking In: Securing Your Hotel Room Against Attacks and Intrusion

Hotel room security should be at the top of everyone’s mind today, as news of Kim Kardashian West being robbed at gunpoint in her Paris hotel room circulates the internet. While celebrity gossip is certainly something we try to avoid, there’s a few interesting details that bring the topic of hotel security to the forefront.

The assailants, who dressed as Police Officers, ransacked the room and made off with a jewelry box and ring worth almost $11 million. While many news sites and blogs are focusing on the sensationalism behind the story, it just goes to show that no matter who you are and how well you think you’re secured, you can still become a target for theft or violence.

The Attack

Complete details of the attack are still scarce, but from what we’ve read so far, West’s robbery occurred at a luxury private mansion. After threatening and handcuffing the mansion’s concierge, five men forced him to open the private apartment. Two of the men were able to gain access to the room and held a gun to Mrs. West’s head.  After locking her in a bathroom, the men took cell phones and the jewelry from the room.

The mansion’s on-site security seems to have been very low or completely missing, allowing the attackers to confront the concierge directly without any delays. In addition, the room itself lacked security options to lock the room from outside access, or they weren’t being utilized at the time of the attack.

While this attack occurred in France, it could have very easily taken place here in the U.S. with the same outcome, if similar security procedures were followed. Below are some things to consider for avoiding attacks like these and keeping you and your family secure.

hotel-security-01

Before You Arrive

Prior to booking your hotel, do your research. With a multitude of travel sites available, pictures and information on the hotel should be plentiful. Consider everything from the general location of the hotel to the visible security features (or lack thereof). Most police departments keep data on crime in different areas and a quick search can determine the frequency of crime around your hotel choice.

Depending on the location of your hotel and the type of stay you’re after, you should know whether interior corridors or exterior corridors are more advantageous. Meaning that the hotel either has doors that open directly to the outside or inside of the hotel. Exterior corridors can be beneficial if you don’t want to leave valuables in your vehicle overnight and want to quickly and discreetly bring them into your room, rather than parade them through the lobby to get to your interior corridor room.

hotel-security-07

Exterior Corridors

Interior corridors afford you a small amount of protection over exterior corridors, as you’d have less of a chance of someone accessing your door. However, most hotels are pretty lax and anyone could just stroll in the door and head to the rooms. Check to see if the lobby has security cameras that would see them on their way in.

Interior Corridors

Interior Corridors

Staying in an interior corridor room, you can request a room close to an exterior exit for ease of escape, but this also means that a thief could do the same. An ideal room can be the second floor close to the stairs that lead down to the first level and an exterior exit right below the door. You’re not right in the path of people coming and going, but you still have an easy egress route. Parking near this exit door and using it to come and go can also prevent others from seeing when you leave and return.

Contact the hotel and ask if rooms are equipped with security features like in-room safes, deadbolts, peepholes and door guards. If not, consider bringing items with you to additionally secure your door. While a post-it-note can easily act as a peephole cover, there’s also travel-sized Portable Peephole Covers available. Reverse peephole viewers are readily available, yet easy to defeat by simply blocking the peephole.

hotel-security-04

Upon Check-In

Keep your luggage within your sight at all times. It might be tempting to have your bags taken up to your room for you, but you risk theft and other concerns when allowing your items to leave your view. Keep in mind that most suitcases can be opened easily, even when locked.

Maintain your situational awareness when checking in and be wary of people attempting to listen in on your check-in. Consider your attire and jewelry from a thief’s perspective. Are you sporting an expensive watch or purse? Items like this allow thieves to “window shop” the guests checking in and determine the target that will provide the most bang for their buck during a robbery.

When you’ve entered your room, check all areas to ensure they’re empty. Double check that your locks are are functional and secure firmly. This especially applies to adjoining room doors and windows. While staying in the room, ensure any door guards are latched and considered traveling with a door wedge to place in the door as a backup to a door guard. If anything is lacking, ask to change rooms.

If your interior handle looks like the one in the video above, take a hand towel, roll it up and shove it behind the handle. It will prevent a bypass attack like this, or from an under door tool that serves the same purpose.

Lastly, consider hiding valuables if no hotel safe is available, or you question its security. A great place can be lightweight items safety pinned in a ziploc bag behind the blinds up high. Sometimes the least likely places can be the best.

hotel-security-03

Un-Announced Visitors

For the West attack, the perpetrators used Police uniforms. We’ve actually seen this same type of thing in recent US attacks, where the attacker wore a security guard’s uniform. If you’re not a criminal or International Man of Mystery, the Police showing up at your door unannounced can bring a certain amount of suspicion with it. Even if you can visibly see uniforms and identification through the peephole, it doesn’t hurt to double check with your local Police station.

Police Officers are constantly checking in with their dispatch and the local dispatchers will most likely be aware that the officers are at your location. A quick call to 911 can confirm that the officers outside your door are legitimate. In a worst-case scenario, if they’re not, you’ll be on the phone with 911 and they can dispatch officers to the scene.

hotel-security-05

Don’t Rely on Others for Your Security

Attacks, like the one mentioned above, happen in seconds and relying on a third party to come to the rescue can mean the situation might be over before help arrives. If you don’t already, consider purchasing a firearm, getting appropriate training with it and becoming licensed to carry it in your state. When your security measures fail, a firearm may be your last line of defense; especially in cases where the attacker is more than a robbery.

For those that are unable or unwilling to carry a firearm, consider choosing a defensive knife to keep with you. As with firearms, it’s important to seek out the appropriate training when carrying a defensive knife.

hotel-security-06

Have an Escape Plan

As every good spy would tell you, always have an escape plan. Hotel rooms are no exception and having a good egress route is beneficial in not only things like attacks, but natural disasters and other emergencies like earthquakes or fires.

If you’re taking our earlier advice and not staying on the ground floor, read up on these reasons for not using the elevator and consider brining along an emergency ladder. If something happens, you can grab your Bolt Bag and make a quick exit. You do have your Bolt Bag ready to go, right?

What do you do to secure your hotel room? Let us know in the comments below.

The World We Live In: Preparing for the Fight at Home

With the recent terrorist attacks on our home soil, it’s time for everyone to say out loud and in a calm manner, “war.” If the majority of us would be willing to acknowledge this, I feel we might see a different outcome.

No Regard

The typical rhetoric of “why” inundates the news networks and sympathizers, as they purposefully or unwittingly comment on how they just want to understand the events. There’s nothing to understand. For reasons we will NEVER know, the individuals perpetrating the attacks surrounding us these days have no regard for the life of their fellow humans. The key point to take away here isn’t the why, but the how.

During the recent attack, the assailant used an edged weapon. Currently, we have no restrictions on kitchen utensils. However, if we were to follow liberal logic regarding this topic, we should all be appalled that such weapons of mass destruction exist. An argument could be made that the lack of gunshots ringing out in response to the killing spree, created a state of confusion that probably lead to him having access to more victims in the early stages. While we continue to fight for our civil liberties and our Second Amendment rights, terrorists will continue to kill our citizens as we turn a blind eye to their very existence.

There Are No Coincidences

What’s of particular interest is the timing to some of the assailant’s actions. It appears he worked as a security guard and was enrolled in school. According to reports I read, he dropped out of school and quit his job over the summer. If you want to understand the how, that would be the first place to start digging.

What compelled him to take the actions he did prior to his killing spree? (Regardless of the outcome, his intent was to kill.) Again, we may never know, but I’m curious as to what type of activity they will find during this period. I’ve come to doubt the existence of coincidence these days.

gonzales-mall-01

Higher Form of War

Perhaps the most disturbing takeaway was his use of the security uniform. This was clearly intentional to help create trust and acceptance during the panic. I hate to admit it, but it’s a sound tactic and my fear is we that we’ll see “copy cat” events in the future.

Again, I don’t believe in coincidence and instead choose to play the “10th man” card and figure out how he was successful. I believe a large part of the success was due to the uniform, so start there and work backwards. Public trust is on the line and therefore it’s imperative we pursue with rabid determination.

Take Action, Don’t Dwell

Putting that aside, you still have to acknowledge two things here; actions and dwell time. Regardless of the situation, what you see is what you get. If you see a person stabbing another person in a public setting, I don’t think you need anything else to justify taking immediate action. Creating distance should be your top priority. Distance is your friend here; the better trained you are, the better you’re able to exploit a tactical advantage such as distance.

The second is dwell time. No matter what’s happening, if your brain sees it, let it see it for what it is. Don’t try to rationalize what’s happening, that’s the dwell time I’m speaking of. Instead, take action immediately. The longer you try to persuade yourself,”this can’t be happening,” the longer the dwell time and worse the outcome potential.

It goes without saying, you must stay vigilantly aware of your surroundings at all times. Take the time now to plan, prepare and train. Time is wasting.
