Is Our Liberty at Risk?

For the most part, we’ve kept fairly quiet on the current issues facing our nation and for a good reason. While there’s no denying that ITS has a presence on the internet that can be used to spread a message, we want it to be one that’s educated, informed and accurate.

There are so many inconsistencies flying around right now from all corners of the Internet; from pro 2nd Amendment groups, anti-gun groups and everything in-between. Many things are on the table right now that will affect our industry, our way of life and our children’s futures.  I feel like those that visit ITS are all concerned citizens that want to better themselves through the skill-set building articles we write, the reviews we produce or the general principles that ITS was founded on. Whether they be active-duty Military, Law Enforcement, Veterans or First Responders, we’re all in this together as a country. A country with tough decisions ahead.

When I first started ITS back in 2009, I had no idea what it would become, but I had one goal in mind. Community. I wanted to create a resource where everyone could share information openly to better their lives and to become more self sufficient. A place that cultivated little known or forgotten skill-sets, yet also provided well-researched and documented reviews on equipment to support those skills.

That aside, I’ve made some life-long friends along the way, which have helped to reinforce the “good judge of character” I’ve personally always felt I’ve had. Those that I consider my friends have many traits I respect and work hard to project in my own life. Honesty, integrity, passion and service towards something bigger than myself. Right now, what scares me the most about what’s on the table is how this is all going to affect my friends and their families.

Current Political Climate

Today finds us in a difficult situation as an industry. Potentially having our rights stripped away directly impacts businesses and decades of combined output and innovation. At what benefit? It seems that those making decisions haven’t really seen factual crime statistics and feel that by restricting our rights, the criminals will be equally affected. When did a criminal, intent on doing harm, ever play by the rules? They don’t, they live outside the laws.

The current legislation on the table is purely for those that live inside the law. This goes for more government intervention in general and a topic for another day. One question I keep asking myself, is when are those that are seeking to restrict our rights, even going to properly research the  difference between a clip and a magazine? One reason that I’ve personally tried to remain quiet on these issues, is to ensure that I’ve done my due diligence in research before making a public statement, waiting until some of the noise died down and actual actions from the government were imminent.

All those have now been met. As of yesterday, Vice-President Biden was quoted during meetings with victims’ groups and gun safety organizations as saying,  “The president is going to act. There are executive orders, there’s executive action that can be taken. We haven’t decided what that is yet.” If you’re familiar with how bills become law, this should cause the hair on the back of your neck to stand up. This is essentially stating that if the result of the current talks and subsequent legislation proposals don’t yield the results the President is looking for, he’ll act as he feels the American people would want him to.

Trust me, I’m trying to stay as optimistic and positive as possible. The fact remains that the President has publicly stated what his agenda is. That’s been made clear through his public statements a few weeks ago. Here’s a link to a YouTube video produced by the White House, if you’d like more background into what I’m mentioning.

I’d encourage you to do your own research into both what’s on the table right now with current legislation and what we’re really looking at in terms of the crime our government is now trying to prevent. A good place to start is with the FBI Crime Statistics. I can’t argue with the fact that what’s happened recently in Newtown and Aurora are tragedies, but will restricting our rights help to prevent more of these incidents from occurring? That’s the real question here. In another video released today by the White House, Vice-President Biden can be heard stating that if just one additional life can be saved, it’s worth it. I personally feel that limiting the legal rights of everyone will not produce the intended outcome of actually saving more lives.

The question I keep asking myself is how much more of our rights being stripped away will America be willing to take? I’m not trying to incite a riot or even state that this is something new, it’s been occurring for much longer than our current administration has been in office. In my personal opinion, we’re reminded time and time again of our current government needing serious reform and I’ll just leave it at that.

At the end of the day we’re all responsible for the country we live in, we all have a duty to make it a better place and one we want our children to grow up in. What can you do? Write your elected officials, be respectful, but remember that they work for us. Support the organizations you believe in, whether that’s  joining the NRA,  the Gun Owners of America  or another organization you firmly believe in.

Farewell John Noveske, We Are Diminished…

Noveske Memorial Fund

Many of you are already aware, but it’s with a heavy heart that I share the news here of John Noveske’s passing on Friday. He was involved in a fatal vehicle accident and will be greatly missed. A true pioneer of this industry and a tremendous innovator. Fair winds and following seas, John.

John is survived by his wife and three children. Rob Curtis of Gear Scout spearheaded an online memorial and we encourage you to donate so that his family will continue to be provided for and taken care of.

John Noveske Remembered by Noveske Rifleworks

Those interested in learning more about the history of John Noveske and Noveske Rifleworks, here is an excerpt from their  catalog:

My Father, John Noveske Sr., raised my brother and I to honor God, to understand fundamental American principles, and to use and respect firearms. As children, we had access to firearms at all times. Our dad trusted us, and we never let him down. At age 13, I was issued a rack grade M1 Garand with 88 rds per week from the DCM and began shooting High Power Rifle matches. This was my only sport growing up, and a private one. I soon realized I probably was not going to be an Astronaut, and decided the best place for me was in the Army.

After the Army, I thought hard about what to do for a living, and figured making rifles was the best thing for me. A seemingly intangible dream was quickly realized when Chris Dichter, owner of PAC-NOR Barreling in Brookings, Oregon, hired me and I began making rifle barrels. The passion went into overdrive. I had a great time there and learned a lifetime of information. In the spring of 2001, I moved back to Grants Pass, Oregon, started my business in my Dad’s garage, fixed up our 80 year old house, married Lorina at a shotgun wedding, and she had our first baby shortly thereafter.

Lightweight Backpacking Step 3: Multi-Function Gear

4 of 4 in the series Lightweight Backpacking

This is the fourth post in my series on lightweight backpacking aimed at helping you reduce your overall pack weight without sacrificing any of the comfort or necessities.

In my first post I introduced you to the concept of lightweight backpacking, the benefits, how to get started, and taking less stuff. The second post focused on weighing your gear, using gear lists, and knowing how much weight you are carrying. The third post focused on reducing the weight of your “Big Three” – your tent, backpack, and sleeping bag.

For this fourth installment I wanted to share another ample method for further reducing your pack weight by selecting pieces of gear that can be used for multiple purposes.

The concept is easy, if you can carry less “stuff”, your overall pack weight will be reduced and you might even reach a point at which you will be able to switch to a smaller volume backpack.

Tip #1 – Sleeping pad as frameless pack support

Introduction to Lightweight Backpacking

Tip #2 – Trekking poles used as shelter/tent poles

Lightweight Backpacking Multi-Function Gear

Here are some examples that I’ve personally used or that I’ve picked up from others over the years.

  1. I carry a lightweight, frameless backpack made by Gossamer Gear. I use my foam sleeping pad as a back support to provide some much needed cushioning and to add rigidity to an otherwise flimsy backpack. I’m carrying my sleeping pad anyway, so why not use it for more than one purpose and dump the frame. The sleeping pad also make a great sitting pad and pillow for catching a few minutes of shut eye
  2. If you have decided to go with a tarp as your shelter you can easily your trekking poles as the upright supports at either end. In some cases you can even replace the tent poles supplied my some manufacturers with more traditional tents and shave almost a pound of your pack weight right there
  3. The classic bandana. A true multitasking piece of gear. Let’s see: Scarf, hat, face mask, headband, handkerchief, sun block for neck, tourniquet, sling, pre-water filter, coffee filter, napkin, dish rag, pot holder, towel, signaling – the list goes on
  4. You can use your cooking pot as your plate, bowl and mug. There’s really no need to bring a whole set of cook wear for eating and drinking when a simple pot or titanium mug will do the work of all three
  5. You can use some ponchos as tarp shelters. GoLite makes a very affordable and durable Poncho Tarp that provides full body rain coverage with a single person tarp that weighs a mere 7 oz! You can combine this with #2 and use your trekking poles to hold up your tarp
  6. The Spork! Need I say more? Maybe invest in a titanium one or the slightly cheaper Light My Fire (LMF) BPA free plastic ones
  7. If you like to carry one of those mylar emergency blankets why not use it as your tent footprint or even as a signaling device in an emergency
  8. Duct tape is another amazing multi-tasker. Use it for all types of ad-hoc gear repairs, bandage wrap, or moleskin substitute for blisters (works great BTW)
  9. Use one of your gear stuff sacks as a make-shift pillow by filling it with your clothes at night and tucking it inside your sleeping bag. An empty hydration bladder can be used for a pillow too
  10. Sleeping with a down jacket or vest on during milder weather may let you reduce the weight of your sleeping bag. You’ll have to experiment with this of course, but if you can stay warm and learn to properly regulate your body heat this can save a few more ounces

Many of these will sound a lot like simple common sense and they are, but learning to make do with less gear and finding creative ways to make the gear that you are carrying do more for you is a skill. Remember, it’s not about sacrificing weight for the sake of it or reducing the effectiveness of your gear – it’s about making smart gear choices that allow you to pack light and go further.

What are some of your best multi-tasking pieces of gear and how do you make them serve double-duty? Share your own tips via the comments below.

Living Better: New Year, New You

1 of 6 in the series Living Better

With 2012 behind us and 2013 ushering in a brand new year, I’d like to take this opportunity to really get at the core of living better.

To me, living better doesn’t mean a fad diet or a meat head workout routine that was designed for someone else, it means integrating healthy core principles into your life that will continue serving you for the long term.

Rather than list out a bunch of resolutions, that will more than likely get broken, I’ll be starting from the ground up and creating a series of articles that will focus on many different aspects of living better. We’ll be discussing topics like nutrition, functional strength and even organization.

This may seem strange coming from ITS, but these things are at the core of who I am and ITS is as a company. My hope is that through these articles you pick up information that you can integrate in your own way. I’m a big advocate of soaking up information and applying it to fit your lifestyle, not following a prescribed plan.

Starting with Fundamentals

Along the lines of not following a prescribed plan, I’ll be up front and say that I don’t have all the answers. This isn’t going to be a my way or the highway type of series. Unlike most things I read, everyone is different. Everyone has different goals and their own measure of success in achieving them. My goal in this series is to present what I know and what’s helped me over the years to stay healthy, happy and motivated.

Living_Better_Sunrise

You’re going to read things that you may agree with, or things you disregard, but I fully expect this and hope that you’ll add in your thoughts in the comments below. I know that I’m going to learn as well from what you offer up.  Don’t expect overnight success with any of the topics we cover, but don’t let that dissuade you from giving them a chance.

Health-y  [hel-thee]  adjective: Possessing or enjoying good health or a sound and vigorous mentality: a healthy body; a healthy mind.

So what are the fundamentals to living a better healthier life? While these are also going to vary from person to person, here are 13 that I believe in and what we’ll be discussing in 2013:

  • Being Conscious of What You’re Putting into Your Body
  • Exercise and Movement
  • Rest and Relaxation
  • Enjoying Nature
  • Living with Honesty and Integrity
  • Spending Time with Family and Friends
  • Working Passionately and Loving What You’re Doing
  • Avoiding Clutter and Staying Organized
  • Giving Back and Helping Others
  • Learning Every Day and Becoming Self-Sufficient
  • Knowing Your Goals and Dreams
  • Defining You and Your Values
  • Trusting Your Instincts

Here’s to a great 2013! I personally can’t wait to present the accompanying articles in the Living Better series and get things started. What goals have you set for yourself in this new year?

Minimalist IWB Holster: Raven Concealment VanGuard II

While I’ve been a Sig guy since I first learned how to Shoot, I’ve also been recently carrying a Glock enough to warrant carry options while I figure out if I want to invest the money into converting all my holsters. This and a few other factors led me to the Raven Concealment VanGuard II Holster System and I haven’t looked back.

I’ve got a few more reviews coming down the pipe on other holster options I’ve been digging recently, but I wanted to take a few minutes to make a video to talk about what I feel to be a major advancement in holsters design and option out there for the end user.

When I first came across the VanGuard II, I had my reservations about it. Namely that it really wasn’t much of a holster in the traditional sense, but as I started to become familiar with it, my opinion quickly changed.
