Solutions for the Every Day Carry of Duct Tape

Duct tape is one of the most useful things on the planet. It can be used to secure, repair, or build in ways that other materials such as rope, glue, or conventional tape cannot.

Because of the hundreds of applications for this miracle material, I have always loved duct tape. I’m especially fond of Gorilla brand duct tape, which has 50% more glue than conventional silver duct tape and adheres to damn near anything.

Unfortunately, while convenient to use, duct tape is very inconvenient to carry around. It comes in these large, 20-yard rolls with a big hole in the center, which makes the tape take up far more space than it should. When you’re carrying a full bag, that extra space could be crucial.

I have found three different ways to easily carry around duct tape: in a mini-roll, a collapsed roll, or on a keychain. Continue reading

ITS Tactical 9/11 Memorial T-Shirt Benefitting the Families of September 11

We’ve wanted to do something for the 10th anniversary of 9/11, but also didn’t want to come up with anything that seemed like a celebration of the tragedy that struck America ten years ago today.

While we’re all believers in celebrating the lives of our fallen, we wanted to put together a shirt worthy of commemorating these heroes that would serve as a reminder day after day, not just simply for the tenth anniversary.

Our limited edition T-shirt directly benefits the Families of September 11, a nonprofit organization founded in October 2001 by families of those who died in the September 11 terrorist attacks. We have a limited number of these shirts and once they’re gone, they’re gone.

This is not a pre-order and these shirts have already been ordered. We expect to ship no later than Friday September 16th and any orders placed after this date will ship immediately provided they’re in stock.

Knot of the Week: Paracord Deployment Lanyard

Paracord Deployment Lanyard

The Paracord Deployment Lanyard has been a long time coming on our Knot of the Week and much like our last KOTW on the Paracord Storage Lanyard, this too is a request from a reader.

This lanyard enables you to not only carry paracord ready to use, but can quickly deploy various lengths of it in a way that’s easy to manage. As most know that have worked with stored paracord, it can easily become unwieldy and tangled.

Just as the storage lanyard keeps paracord ready to deploy, the deployment lanyard is a vast improvement that we think you’ll immediately integrate.

Paracord Deployment Lanyard » Misc.

(Strength: 2/Secure: 3/Stability: 2/Difficulty: 2)

Please refer to our Knot of the Week introduction post for a description of what these ratings mean.

This method for storing paracord can be used in nearly any length of Paracord, but for this demonstration we’ll be using 25 feet.

Uses:

  • Keeping paracord handy and ready to use at a moment’s notice
  • Decorative way to store paracord
  • Storing paracord in a “fob” design that can be quickly deployed

Tying Instructions:

Paracord Deployment Lanyard

  1. Start by creating a bight in one end of the paracord, using a closed fist as a height guide.
  2. *Ensure that the amount of bight exposed above your closed fist is the size that you’d like your “loop” to be.
  3. Take the working end of this bight and melt it to the standing part of the paracord.
  4. *You may need to heat up the standing part of the paracord as well to get it to bind.*
  5. After the bight is secured and a loop has been made, start either wrapping the paracord around your hand like the pictures below, or in loops like in the video.
  6. *Leave yourself a length of around six feet at the end to start making the overwrapping for the deployment lanyard.*
  7. Starting near the top of the wrapped paracord, wrap a lock into the paracord (see video) and continue to tightly wrap downward.
  8. At the end of the wrapping, simply tuck the working end into itself and melt it down for added security.
  9. The loop can now be used to hook onto a keychain or carabiner for fast deployment of your paracord.

Field Testing the Gerber Cable Dawg

I recently had the opportunity to take the Gerber Cable Dawg on a multi-week exercise and put it to the test in the field. The Dawg is one of the most well thought out tools I’ve come across, specifically targeting the communication specialists out there.

In one tool they’ve combined a cable cutter, knife, CAT5 jacket cutter, wire stripper, RJ45 crimper, and an interchangeable magnetic driver for your flat, Phillips, and even punch-downs.

My team’s multi-week experience with the tool included creating custom-length Ethernet cables, punching down wires, snipping the ends off of zip ties, opening up boxes full of network gear, etc. Essentially, we used the tool for all the real-world things one would expect from someone setting up comms gear in the field. Our goal was to install a series of IP-based cameras and other sensors, along with the supporting comms gear, bringing everything back into a small Network Operating Center (NOC) at a Forward Operating Base (FOB). Securing Your Digital Life: Simple Tips for Your Devices in Public

2 of 2 in the series Securing Your Digital Life

Securing Your Digital Life PublicIn today’s society, our devices are constantly connecting to one another through multiple formats. These devices contain a multitude of different methods to ensure that we’re able to connect whenever and wherever we are.

Most smart phones contain connection abilities for X, EV and 3G/4G Cellular Networks, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. A simple device like a cell phone can have the ability to connect using all these six different methods!

These public connections are great for sharing and receiving information on the go, but unfortunately this means our devices are open to even more threats than ever before.   For example, your cell phone may be connecting to different devices and networks in public without your knowledge. It’s very important to understand how to secure your devices against unwanted intrusion in order to keep your information safe while in public.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is one of the most popular connections that devices use and public Wi-Fi is becoming more and more popular. Wherever we happen to be, we usually have access to a Wi-Fi network. Identity thieves and malicious users favor public Wi-Fi networks because the security on these networks is usually next to nothing. These users can access files and other information that your computer is sharing without your knowledge.

A good step you can take to secure your device on a public network is to ensure you have an up to date firewall installed that will monitor your connection. Users may want to consider upgrading to a different firewall program other than the default offered by the manufacturer.

Changing your sharing permissions is an important way to keep your information secure. Many computers share information by default in order to allow sharing of files on a home network. We recommend disabling all file and folder sharing when you’re in public to avoid any unwanted access to your device.

Bluetooth

Bluetooth devices have the ability to exchange data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices, creating personal area networks (PANs.) Bluetooth is great for quickly sharing a file between two devices or printing a document wirelessly, it can also be used to pair accessories to your devices such as earpieces or external speakers.

Having Bluetooth active can become a security risk if your device doesn’t have the correct settings. Many devices have Bluetooth enabled by default and some are even enabled to allow other devices to connect. Malicious users can access your device through the Bluetooth connection and copy files or gain access to another device attached to your Bluetooth device.

The good news is that most phones have the capability to turn Bluetooth on and off fairly easily. Bluetooth isn’t necessary for any functions other than pairing another device to yours, so you will not be limiting the functions of your device.

Location Services

Many smartphones and other devices utilize GPS and radio technology to allow programs and apps to run things like navigation and location check-ins. However, many of these services are running all the time and not just when you’re accessing that program or app.

Most smartphones give you the option to disable location services and many of them can be turned on and off with ease for times when you want to utilize features like navigation. Check out Data Leaks: Location Based Services and Why You Should be Concerned, for more about the security risks that location based services can carry with them.

Staying Secure

Keeping your devices secure while utilizing public connections is relatively simple as long as you keep track of the connections your device is using. Some companies offer physical devices that will disable the ability to connect if you need to absolutely make sure that your device stays disconnected.

The best method to ensure a device doesn’t connect to anything is obviously to power down that device. However, there are situations when the device may need to be utilized immediately and you may not have time to wait for it to power up. With the right knowledge of how your devices operate and how to maintain its connections, you can keep your information safe and private when using it in public.

Gun Control means Using Both Hands

Editor-in-Chief’s Note: Please join us in welcoming former Navy SEAL and current Director of Training at Center Mass Group, Chris Sajnog as a contributor on ITS Tactical.

I live in the Socialist Republic of California, where we take gun control to the extreme. I’m not too sure  of the exact language of all the gun laws we have here, but I’m pretty sure you can still possess a BB-gun as long as it is a single-load, one-pump deal and you use soft rubber projectiles.

Because of all the  restrictions on capacity, we need to make sure every shot we fire finds its mark. In the other 49 states  across our Great Nation, feel free to spray and pray, but when in the Republic…Gun Control rules the  day.

Today I’m going to address three amendments that need to be added to the current list of gun control  laws. By enacting these laws, you will find that not only will your rounds will be delivered safely to their  intended target, but you will even save money by wasting less ammunition. Continue reading
