What Do You Think about Content Geared towards Women at ITS Tactical?

Your feedback is a critical element to our development here at ITS Tactical, so I have a question that I’m really hoping to get your response to. Should there be more content for women on ITS? We’d like to hear from you no matter if you’re a female follower of ITS, or if you’re a male follower who thinks your wife, girlfriend, daughter or friend would be interested in posts and reviews geared toward them.

At the 2011 SHOT Show in Las Vegas I noticed a larger segment of the booths there that had things specifically for women. There were  even entire booths dedicated to the female consumer. Having attended the show in 2010 with ITS as well, the difference was so significant to me that it confirmed what I had been thinking before we made it to SHOT. We should have content dedicated to helping women become better prepared for self-protection and anything they might encounter. Continue reading

RSA SecurID Breach and Why You’re Getting Apology Emails from Your Bank

The last two weeks has seen a buzz of cyber security problems. First, RSA announced a very sophisticated breach. Anyone who has ever had to use an RSA SecurID two-factor authentication product has or will be affected by the breach. Two-factor authentication consists of something you know and something you have.

The know part refers to a user’s password, or PIN code. The have part refers to the one-time pad generator found on the SecurID token. The theory is simple, even if a hacker obtains your password, they lack possession of your token and cannot break into the system. Continue reading

ITS Tactical 2nd Anniversary Party AAR

I thought I’d throw up a small After Action Report today from the awesome time we all had Saturday at the 2nd Anniversary Party!

We nearly had the whole ITS Crew here at our HQ in Fort Worth, which was exciting in itself.  Mike flew in from D.C., Eric from Florida, Jason from Houston and Matt took the train down from Oklahoma with a few of his buddies.

Mike, Eric, Jason and I spent Saturday morning hiking around the trails of Cedar Ridge Nature Preserve, checking out Mike’s ENO Hammock and locating a nearby Geocache. It was a great way to spend the morning before we had to start running errands to get everything ready for the party that night.  On a side note, stay tuned for more on Geocaching; we have something pretty cool planned on ITS! New Breakthrough from Zulu Nylon Gear! SILENT RIP Hook and Loop

Zulu Nylon Gear Silent Rip

Zulu Nylon Gear has done it again! Not only are they the awesome manufacturers of our Discreet Messenger Bag, but they’ve now managed to produce hook and loop (Velcro) with no sound signature!

As you may know, the biggest complaint with hook and loop fastener is it’s inherent sound signature. The sound that’s produced by opening hook and loop can  definitely give away your position in a tactical environment and make it that much easier for the opposition to detect you.

Effective starting today, all new Discreet Messenger Bags shipped will feature Zulu’s SILENT RIP technology! We’ve included a video below that Zulu put together demonstrating this breakthrough product that WILL take the tactical industry by storm! You have to see this to believe it!

Knot of the Week: How to Tie an Etrier and Create a Field Expedient Ladder

Etrier Climbing DIY

In this week’s Knot of the Week we’ll teach you how to tie the Frost Knot and form a length of tubular webbing into an Etrier, which is a French word meaning stirrup. In climbing, an Etrier is often referred to as an aider or a climbing ladder.

While hard to pronounce, the Etrier is an easy to tie and very effective way of creating a ladder to reach heights when climbing or in an emergency situation.

With a little practice, you can trust in your skills and know that you too will be able to simply carry some tubular webbing into the field and create a field expedient climbing ladder if needed.

Etrier » Loops

What you’ll need to tie you own Etrier is simply a 20 ft. length of 1″ tubular webbing, which you can get from most outdoor shops like REI. You’ll also need paracord for the step we’ll show on whipping each rung of your Etrier for added support.

There are many commercially available Etriers out there, but can be much more expensive than making one yourself. The purpose of this KOTW isn’t to replace a commercial version for climbing, but to show the utility and ease of creating a ladder out of seemingly nothing.

While the original purpose of an Etrier is for big wall climbing, it really doesn’t have to be used for rock climbing at all, hence the reason we’re referring to it as field expedient ladder. In rock climbing you wouldn’t want a long ladder, but in an emergency situation you might.

(Strength: 5/Secure: 5/Stability: 5/Difficulty: 1)

Please refer to our Knot of the Week introduction post for a description of what these ratings mean.

Uses:

  • Big Wall Climbing, Aider
  • Field Expedient Ladder
  • Join two Loops of Tubular Webbing (much like the Tape Knot)

Tying Instructions:

  • The first step in creating an Etrier is to tie a Frost Knot so you’ll have a loop at the top for a tie-in/clip-in point.
  • Find the mid point of your tubular webbing, then trace back to the ends.
  • Form a bight in one end and slip the other end into the bight, like a sandwich.
  • Tie an overhand knot using all three parts, creating a loop.
  • From here you’ll simply tie a series of overhand knots to form the rungs or steps of the ladder.
  • You also might want to offset the steps, as we show, or simply tie them all to one side (see video for details)
  • To pull each step, simply pull one strand of webbing longer than the other and tie an overhand knot.
  • A general guide for the length of each rung is to make them about 1-1.5 ft. in height.
  • To further support the steps, you can whip each rung.
  • Double the webbing by folding it over to create a channel to whip into (see video for details and this article on whipping).
  • Note that after climbing this Etrier, it may be difficult to untie the tubular webbing.

Today is Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day, What will You do to Honor Them?

Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans DayCongress recently passed a resolution making March 30th Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day. The day is to honor Veterans who served during Vietnam and is much needed in my opinion.

When these brave men who sacrificed so much returned from duty, they were often met by protesters and anti-war clowns that belittled them and attempted to dishonor all that they stood for.

The significance of March 30th marks the anniversary of the day the last combat and combat support units completely withdrew from South Vietnam.

The image shown above is a photo I took during a Veteran’s Day parade a few years ago in Fort Worth. I thought it really captured the moment well and showed a true example of Vietnam Veteran’s pride in all they did to ensure our way of life here.

Please use this day to call, write, or personally thank a Vietnam Veteran for their service. Buy them a cup of coffee, turn your brain off and listen to their memories. One of these days their won’t be many of these Veterans left, much like our WWII Veterans and the few allies still living from WWI.

The absolute best way you can thank a Veteran though, is to live each day to its fullest and never let their sacrifice go in vain.

Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day Video

The video below is a great tribute to Vietnam Veterans and features some closing remarks by Debbie Lee, the mother of Marc Lee. Lee was the first SEAL killed in action during the Iraq war and fought bravely in Ramadi.

I was in BUD/s with Marc in class 251 and have worn a KIA bracelet with his name on for many years to honor his sacrifice. Please head over and visit Debbie’s Website, America’s Mighty Warriors, to learn how you can help honor and support America’s military heroes.

What will you do today to honor our country’s Vietnam Veterans?
