Huckberry Curated

I wanted the products (I selected) to directly reflect those that have positively influenced my life, whether it’s a NEMO Tent that helped me weather a storm or The Gift of Fear, which taught me to listen to my instincts. These are all products I’d wholeheartedly recommend to you over a beer (I’ll be drinking Guinness). – Bryan Black

What To Do in the Crucial Three Hours after a Burglary

Home Invasion Forced Entry

The first three hours after you’ve discovered that you were burglarized are very crucial. During these first hours, you have to pick yourself up, assess the situation and take care of your family. Here’s what you can do to recover from the incident and a few things you can do prior to stay ahead of the game if this ever happens to you.

Hour One: Check and Report

Immediately after the incident, or after you’ve discovered that you were a victim of burglary, call the police and immediately check if everyone in your family is okay and not physically hurt. Tend to the youngest members first, as they are very susceptible to nervous breakdowns and trauma. If anyone is hurt or too shaken, quickly get them the medical attention they need.

If you weren’t at home when the crime took place, call 911 immediately after you’re sure that you’ve been robbed. Some cases aren’t reported, as people think that there’s no point in contacting the authorities. There’s still a chance that your things can still be recovered, so don’t lose hope. Try not to enter your home or touch anything before the police arrive. Stay with neighbors or inside your car and lock the doors. Burglars may still be inside your house.

If everyone is well, not physically hurt and the area is clear, check which of your belongings were stolen or damaged. Create two separate lists for these items as the police and your insurance company will need these. Before an event like as this happens, it’s a good idea to take photos of your valuable items and keep a record of model and serial numbers. This can be beneficial when providing the report to police and your insurance agent. Be sure to file a police report within 24-hours of the crime, as you’ll need this in the event you plan to file an insurance claim.

The hardest thing to get over after a burglary is the emotional damage. Many victims feel violated and unsafe after their sanctum sanctorum is invaded.

People who’ve been burglarized used to believe that their home was the last safe place, but that security has been breached and they feel violated,” Psychologist Mory Framer told the Los Angeles Times. Framer is a psychologist at Barrington Psychiatric Center in Los Angeles, which has a division that treats individuals who’ve gone through trauma related with incidents like robberies or explosions.

Hour Two: Clean-up

Start healing emotionally by cleaning up right after the police investigation. It will be difficult, but it’s a necessary step for you to move on, especially if your home is ransacked. You’ll feel violated along with a nagging sense of being alarmed. Cover any damaged part of the house and remove any unusable furniture or appliances.

These things will be a reminder of the incident for the next few weeks, so getting them out of sight will help a lot. Consider rearranging furniture or repainting the room where the burglary took place. The simple act of changing the look of your place helps a lot in moving on and will signify that you are starting anew.

Hour Three: Plan Ahead

As a part of getting over the incident, prepare for the future. Check that your alarm system is working properly and do an assessment of your house. The key is to think like a burglar yourself. Look for weak points or areas where you can enter easily without anyone knowing. Focus on strengthening the security of these areas. Change the locks in your home, get shatter-proof screens or even upgrade your home security system. Others find it very helpful to take self-defense classes. It not only prepares you personally, but will help you heal emotionally. Being proactive about the future is a big step in moving on.

Editor-in-Chief’s note: We’ve put together a great resource article I’d recommend reading if you haven’t yet on Tips to Protect You and Your Family Against Home Invasions, many of the principles of assessing and strengthening home security are addressed in the article.

Also, call your insurance company and discuss improvements in your plan. Ask your agent how you can be better prepared in the future. If you were put in a bad financial state because of the incident, consider an emergency loan. Banks also offer plans and programs for these types of situations.

It’s okay to feel upset about what happened. Acceptance is the key and moving on is the next step. Family and friends will help you a lot in times of need, find time to distract yourself by holding small parties at your house with the people you love. Reconnecting with people around you will help you get back on your feet. If you find that the incident has affected your daily life, consider checking up with experts who can help you out. They can suggest activities or, in extreme cases, medication that can alleviate anxiety.

What are some tips you would offer to a friend in the wake of a home invasion or a burglary?

The Mogadishu Mile and the Race Inspired by the Historical Event

During the Battle of Mogadishu (also known as the Battle of the Black Sea) on October 4th, 1993, a rally point was created from the site of a helicopter crash, which had carried members of Task Force Ranger and SFOD-D (Delta Force), to a rendezvous point where the 10th Mountain Division was waiting. While the Black Hawk Down movie depicts that point as Mogadiscio Stadium, the book by Mark Bowden mentions it was an intersection of Hawlwadig Road and National Street, where they transferred to vehicles and then transitioned to the soccer stadium.

While those details shouldn’t take away from the heroic actions of the soldiers on the ground that day, who took small-arms fire, RPGs and suffered dehydration and even casualties, the Mogadishu Mile was more of a methodical maneuver than a full out run.

Mogadishu Mile Race

The Mogadishu Mile Memorial Run being held in Irving, TX on October 5th, commemorates the 20th anniversary of Operation Gothic Serpent and the members of Task Force Ranger killed during the operation on October 3rd, 1993. In addition, the event raises funds for Rangers wounded or killed during the Global War on Terror and this year’s run proceeds will go to support the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. During the event, actual members of Task Force Ranger will be running the race as a tribute to those lost but never forgotten.

Panteao Battle of the Black SeaSomething I really like about the Mogadishu Mile Memorial Run is that in addition to registering for either the 5k or True Mile Race, you can also register for a virtual 5k race. While it states you’re registering for the 5k, it is virtual and you could probably do the true mile instead if you desired. I’ve personally registered for the virtual 5k, as I have prior commitments that day, but I’ve made a pledge to get a 5k in that day to remember those from Operation Gothic Serpent.

Make sure you check out the Mogadishu Mile 5k Run online for more details and to register. Head over to their their Facebook page too for updates. If you’re interested in more information about the Battle of the Black Sea, be sure to check out Panteao’s DVD Documentary and the untold story of that battle as told by Delta Force member MSG Paul R. Howe, retired.

Visiting the International Spy Museum: A Photo Tour

Ever since learing about the International Spy Museum‘s opening, back in July of 2002, I’ve wanted to visit. Being the only public museum in the United States solely dedicated to the world of espionage, was enough to include it on my bucket list. While in Washington D.C. a few weeks back, I had the opportunity to stop by and visit for a few hours.

International Spy Museum

As you may have gathered from our article content on ITS, I’m very fond of our country’s roots in espionage and ways that we can continue to learn and adapt certain principles from it into our everyday lives. From situational awareness, human intelligence, surveillance detection routes and even dead drops, these techniques continue to live on as viable options for the common man to protect against imminent threats.

The Spy Museum bills itself as “the largest collection of international espionage artifacts ever placed on public display, many being seen in public for the first time. These artifacts illuminate the work of famous spies and pivotal espionage actions, as well as help bring to life the strategies and techniques of the men and women behind some of the most secretive espionage missions in world history.”

Spy Museum Photo Tour 003

I’m very glad that a resource like the International Spy Museum exists and is helping the public learn about an important facet of our rich history. I wish that I would have had the time to sit through some of their lectures or interactive experiences. The museum has something for everyone, including families and specific lectures geared towards kids.

Below, I’ve assembled a collection of photos I took there that will hopefully give you a taste of what the museum is like. However, it’s truly something that should be experienced in person and not to be missed! For more information on the International Spy Museum, including how to plan your visit or just to learn more about the world of espionage, visit them online.

Labor Day: Remembering the American Worker

Labor Day Poster

This 1964 poster seems to sum up what Labor Day represents quite well.

Labor Day in the United States is a time for taking stock of past economic achievements and for setting future goals designed to raise the individual’s standard of living.

The celebration of Labor Day aims to reflect on the accomplishments of American workers “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” [Peter J. McGuire]

United We WinA tribute to those that expelled blood, sweat and tears in years past as well as all that continue to make our country what it is today.

Today we honor the American worker and invite you to participate in a moment of reflection at some point during your day. This nation was built on long hours and tireless dedication and it’s best to not be forgotten.

“Under the spreading chestnut tree
The village smithy stands;
The smith a mighty man is he
And the muscles of his brawny arms
Are strong as iron bands.
He earns whatever he can,
His brow is wet with honest sweat,
And looks the whole world in the face,
For he owes not any man.”

Excerpt from The Village Blacksmith by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Triple Aught Design Founder Patrick Ma Separates From Company

I’m disheartened to hear the news today of Patrick Ma separating from Triple Aught Design, the company he founded in 1997. The press release states the reason for the break as “unresolved disputes with the two remaining managers… Brett Eisenberg and David Cahill,” who along with Patrick, formed the entity known as Triple Aught Design, LLC in August of 2010.

Patrick Ma

As the founder of my own company, it’s always hard to read of another company’s founder leaving the project they got off the ground and grew from humble beginnings.

I have a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for what Patrick has built in this industry and all that he’s accomplished and continues to accomplish.

Patrick’s passion, ingenuity and focus on design has been an inspiration for me as I’ve grown ITS through the years. From his innovative product designs to Rocket World Vinyl Toys that litter my desk, Kelly and I are proud to call Patrick, Polly, Archer, Griff and their newest son Wolfe, friends.

We look forward to supporting Patrick in all that the future holds, including his new Creative Director position at MOTUS.

MOTUS 50

“We have one life in this world, so do good, have the strength to fight for what is right, live and laugh with those who you love and cherish, follow your heart and intuition, and have the courage to blaze the new trails that you are proud to call your own.” ~ Patrick York Ma, 2013

Combat Flip Flops Offers Exclusive Discount to ITS Members

Combat Flip Flops

They may be “bad for running and worse for fighting” but they’re comfortable, stylish and by supporting Combat Flip Flops, you’re helping to build a strong economy through their manufacture in Afghanistan. Their signature style draws inspiration from the Afghan culture and works to create a connection with the wearer.

Bryan and Kelly have both tried a pair for themselves and were truly impressed with the craftsmanship and quality of these flip flops. We decided it was something we needed to share and we worked out a deal with Combat Flip Flops to provide a discount to members of ITS Tactical.

Combat Flip Flops History

The company was started by two American soldiers who spent numerous deployments in Afghanistan. Together they saw first hand the need for jobs as Afghans worked to build a sustainable way of life for their families.

As international forces withdraw in 2014, the mature Afghan National Army and Police will take the lead. Footwear manufacturers in Kabul depend heavily on military contracts, so any decrease in volume has a huge impact on operations. The team is working to expand and fill orders as quickly as possible while also enabling locals to make a living.

Combat Flip Flops has been generous enough to offer ITS Tactical Members 25% off their entire order through combatflipflops.com. This deal is good on anything in their store which includes stickers, t-shirts, etc. and obviously flip flops.

While you’re there, you should also check out their Blamo’s selection. These flip flops may have a minor blemish but they still are perfectly good to wear, have the same warranty as their counterparts and they come at a great discounted price.

Sometimes mistakes happen. We get a little glue on a footbed, a stitch line gets crazy, natural leather appears natural. Others may refer to their less than perfect products as “seconds,” “B grade,” or the like. We like to call our special creations “Blamo’s”.

Tough Hook: Is Your Hanger Strong Enough to do a Pull-up From?

Since backing the Tough Hook project on Kickstarter and receiving my backer award, I’ve been trying to beat up the Tough Hook however I can. Short from dropping it from a six-story building, I’ve attempted quite a few of my own challenges to test its strength.

Tough Hook 02

Aside from loading it down with heavy plate carriers and armor, or simulating tossing it around to see if the carrier would slip off, I’ve even done a few pull-ups from one. In the video below, I’ll walk through the features of the Tough Hook and demonstrate just how tough they really are.

The Tough Hook was designed by former Army Sgt. Tarik Lazri to support heavy equipment like body armor, scuba gear and Police equipment. The main feature of the hanger is the ability for it to “flip over” and turn into a carrying device for your gear, utilizing the integrated carrying handle. This is perfect  if you need to quickly go from hanging your body armor/plate carrier to transporting it. The handle opening is also large enough to get a gloved hand inside of.

IMG 2228

Opposing hooks flank the Tough Hook on each side and keep the straps on your plate carrier or gear from sliding off. The plastic (resin) I-beam hanger lives up to its tough moniker with hardly any noticeable flex, even while doing pull-ups from them.

Tough Hook 04

I couldn’t find any documentation on the Tough Hook Website stating the origin of manufacturing, but a small “Made in America” appears on the Tough Hook itself. A few things I like are the Tough Hook 100% unconditional replacement/money back guarantee, they stand behind their product and it shows.

Tough Hook 01

Tough Hook 06

Tough Hook 05

There’s also a great form on the Tough Hook Website that allows you to send a Tough Hook directly to a soldier with a $20 donation. This is also the price to pick one up for yourself in Black or Tan from buy-tough-hook.com

Make sure you watch the embedded video above all the way through for your chance to win a Tan Tough Hook from ITS Tactical. Click here if the video isn’t appearing.

Update: The contest is now closed and the winner contacted. Thanks to all who entered and congrats to Jeff M.!
